I went to vocational school back in the late 70s. I went on to college, but still use those skills.

In the 80s everyone started pushing for college education, and demand for vocational schools dried up, and they are mostly gone now. That was one of the biggest social mistakes ever made.

Our high school had an option for a vocational class for half the school day for juniors and seniors. I rebuilt my motorcycle engine in year 2. (It blew a piston passing a school bus.)

10/10 don’t recommend the industry. Been in the auto industry for over 10 years and it’s only getting worse(for us the techs)

Yeah, we should stop training people for the industry. That should make it better.

At least when I left the industry in 2008, I felt the problem was that UTI and other auto tech schools saturated the market. We were treated like we were all disposable.

Not to mention these schools were overpriced then, can't imagine what they cost now. Truth be told, I bet a lot of good kids don't make it to the dealership level because these schools are gate keepers of the industry now.

Ironically, I was with Benz too. I hear ya and agree lol

I'll vouch for trade schools.
Tried college in the 80s and it bored the hell out of me. Went to electronics school, excelled in the classes and was helping out the instructors. Went on to a job with the parent company of the school which happened to be in the auto test tools industry. Fun job but kept moving up in various roles and companies and ended up in computers and have had a great career. Some of the classmates at the school I kept in contact with ended up as electronic assemblers or bench techs. Not much fun. I have probably done better than most high school classmates that went to college.
You can provide people with the tools they need. How they use them is up to them.

Yep. I went to electricity/electronics at a vocational school... junior/senior year of HS, half days. I can do residential wiring, and have wired our houses. Just retired as a network engineer. As everyone here knows I'm sure, you can make a great living in the trades. Some people just don't dig college or working white collar jobs. Nothing wrong with that.

I will say I do appreciate trade schools though, I would prefer my kid to learn a trade than just go to college and figure it out along the way while racking up debt. I just think they also sometimes create problems in some industries.

Back in the 1960's only the "dummies" went to Technical school 1/2 days. After I graduated college, I spent the next few years doing night classes at the same Technical school to get the training I passed up in high school!
