I was under the hood of my 2019 XLT (43K) a few days ago and noticed a loose end on a rubber hose.
The hose comes off a piece that is right behind the fan but seems to be separate from the fan body. The piece of hose is around 6 inches long and attached at both ends with a crimp-on hose clamp. Riding piggyback on top of the rubber hose is a small wire bundle.

I wonder what the purpose of the hollow rubber tubing is, as both ends fit around an solid aluminum plug. If nothing else the rubber hose serves as a carrier for the wiring.
Maybe the engineers figured if something came loose that close to the fan it would better to have something soft than a metal bracket, if that assembly were to hit fan blades ?

Anyhow, about 3/16" of the end of the hose had broken off along with the same width crimped hose clamp. The hose was split on the end for another 3/16'.
For now I secured it with a wide hose clamp that covers the split.
I went to the dealership where I bought the Ranger. The truck is still under factory warranty for the drivetrain (also have an extended warranty) so I expected them to order the part and fix it. The service guy said he have to check to see if the repair would be covered under warranty ?

Service sent me to parts, as if they didn't feel like describing the part to the parts guy.
Parts guy said that just the hose was not available, they'd have to order a whole new fan assembly.
(Doesn't surprise me. I lost one of the little rubber bumpers for the console lid a while back.. I asked about getting a new one and was told I'd have to buy a whole new console lid.)

I'm tempted to just replace the hose myself, only hard part would be opening the clips that hold the wire bundle to the hose, might have to buy new clips if they break.
This dealership might have good techs, but the two condescending service writers have spoiled my dealership experience the few times I've had to take my truck in.
Nearly every question I've posed to people in sales, service or parts are met with a blank look or a B.S. answer.
If I want to learn something about my truck, this forum is 1000 times better than the clueless folks who work where I bought my Ranger.
50 years of driving, 20 of that as a commercial driver, and buying new vehicles for nearly that long, and this is the worst dealership that I've seen.
They aren't the only Ford dealer in Arizona, just the only one close to me.

So what is this part that the hose attaches to ? Of course, no one in parts or service could tell me, just that I needed a new fan from Ford, and the repair might not be under warranty !
In the pics below, the black part is not attached to, and rotates independently from the grey metal of the fan body.

Now the system description is vague, but I think might be some sort of vent for internal cooling of the clutch and the wire harness runs with it.

So, i would just replace the hose as long as the nipples are intact.

It is an odd design though.

I think it is an anti-rotation device for the fan clutch assembly.

After reading the OP description again and seeing that the electronic control piece rotates independently, then I agree to it being an anti-rotation design, but it would make more sense just to mount it with bolts vs free spin. (Odd Design) as there has to be some movement (wear) item that is causing the hose to split and break.

Yet, another why is it designed this way to add to my list to research.

It is flexible to allow for runout of the clutch assembly. Apparently, it is not holding up for some.

I searched online and cannot find a separate part number for this hose. I looked at mine, and there is no part number on the hose either. So far, mine is still intact, but both clamps are somewhat loose on the hose.

Hi Lee,

I would get Benny at LevittownFordparts.com or on these forums to see if he can track down just the hose. It appears the bends are molded and just tubing may not package correctly. Benny should be able to tell you if the hose is PIA the fan clutch. BTW PIA is Purchased in Assembly and usually if PIA it is not serviced independently.

Best,
Phil

Would the hose be long enough if you cut off the bad end of the hose and attached with a new clamp?

It's long enough (barely), clamped over the split end.
If I cut the split off, then it's beginning to be short, and might pull on the anti rotation housing some.

Sorry to revive this thread, but given you guys are working in this area of the engine, surely you would have the answer.

I need to replace the alternator belt's idler pully, as it was noisy and making a ticking noise that almost identically matched a valvetrain noise *whew*. Thrilled that this is all that it is, but To get that idler off I need to remove the idler for the AC belt and this fan clutch needs to be loosened just a bit.

Is it a righty tighty or is it a left handed thread?

I am not sure on this - but you may be able to pull the (4ea) bolts on the (Fan Pulley) and it MAY slide forward enough to get the (Idler) bolt out.

But (if needed) the Fan Clutch (Nut) = LH Threads, I do not recall the size, but the tool from (Rent A Tool) is usually just (one size)

Not to spook you - but as a precaution on this - I would replace the Belt Tensioner as well, and for only PRECAUTION as it is unknown what causes this.
Since this has been causing a drag (increased tension) to the tensioner - It may be a good, just in case - Replace it while here part.
Or
At the very least do a good inspection at this break point for any visible hairline cracks, if cracks are noted then the Front Timing Cover - needs replaced.

Again - the chance of damage here is slim, but since it has been reported that this has happened and unknown of true cause - It may be worth a good look at this area.

Since this belt incorporates: Alternator - Water Pump - Crank Pulley and the Idler & Tensioner

I did try weasling out the pulley after loosening the 4 bolts on the AC Adler but sadly just not enough room :(

I'll take a good look at the front cover in those areas for sure. Thank you for confirming my prediction on the clutch threads!
