Update after some miles on the Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail...

  • Pressure: Discount had them close to 40 PSI after install. That high pressure actually felt good and nimble around town. Very firm but not harsh. As soon as I drove on a forest road (decent quality) I realized the pressure was too high. I settled on 35 PSI but could go lower for more comfort off road.
  • Overall the truck is way less bouncy compared to the stock Handkook Dynapros. I have the Fox 2.0 shocks, but would be curious how much just changing the tires would improve the stock FX4 suspension without the aftermarket shocks. Maybe someone has tried.
  • Towing: Wow, such a good improvement over the Hankooks with my 5,000 GWVR trailer. I drove 180 miles last weekend over the Cascades. Towing was more confident and less bouncy (same WDH, shocks. Only change was the tires). Highly recommend this tires (and probably any XL load tire) for heavier towing with our Rangers.
Update after about 6 weeks:
  • I had the chance to drive in wet weather on the west side of the Cascades last week. The Coopers drove great, felt very planted and were confidence inspiring. This was while towing a U-Haul trailer. Much better than the stock Hankooks in the wet.
  • I lowered the pressure to 34-35 PSI all around. Might still try lower for dirt roads.
  • The new Coopers are quieter than the Hankooks and my Nokian winter tires. It is very noticeable.

I have Cooper Discoverer AT3s (p265/60R 18) on my 2021 w/FX4 and the STX Special Edition pkg which incl. 18in wheels. I have stock suspension and run the tires at the stock 30psi. I don't notice any bounciness, although the ride could be a little less stiff. I now have 12,000 mi on them and I am completely satisfied. I rotate every 6,000 mi and they appear to be wearing well. We had an experience on I-90 in SD recently with heavy crosswinds with moderate rain. I slowed to 60-65mph from 80 as it was rocking us pretty good, but we never slid. One poor soul jackknifed a hitch-mounted RV. MPG is down probably 1+ mpg over the Hankooks, which I think Ford spec'ed for the fuel milage and long wear- they were at 5/32 at 50k mi.

I don't know what it is about service centers- any of them- that insist on over-inflating tires. My QuickLane does and our local Shell ExpressLube does on the Mariner. The Ranger's TPMS' are 1 psi higher than my $90 inflator gauge on my compressor, which I use as the benchmark. I equate over or under filled tires as almost as bad as over- or under filled oil level.

My mileage is probably down 1-2 MPG also (I went with a larger 265/65 R18). My Hankooks were down to 8/32-9/32 at 38k miles (probably 30k miles of usage as I use snow tires for a few months a year). Good thing I will say about the Hankooks is the mileage and wear is excellent. They were decent on mild forest roads also.

Update after a summer. Nothing new to add other than a wear report. I am very happy with the performance and look of the Coopers.

Regarding wear. 5,500 miles over the summer (May-Oct). 2,000 of those miles were towing a 5,000 lbs travel trailer. Tires are at 10/32-11/32. New is listed at 12/32. I will be switching over to winter tires soon (for about 5 months). I usually replace my tires around 5/32-6/32. I'm guessing I will get about 35k miles out of these tires. Definitely wearing faster than the Hankooks, but such a nicer tire. Some of that is towing. I did not tow as much with the Hankooks.
