I never even thought to complain about it. It's so common in today's trucks I just accept it.

Yeah it's a bit of that big truck sound in a 'lil Ranger. :D

at least this fan isnt as annoying as my neighbor down the street with a 3500 cummins diesel Ram dually 4X4 with those stupid AF testicles hanging off his trailer hitch

KLACKAKLACKAKLACKAKLACKAKLACKAKLACKA as he idles down the street on a cold morning.
Hi RP,

I know what you mean, I am baffled how the Ram diesel got certified for Pass By Noise being so loud!

Hi Ken,

This condition is commonly referred as Morning Sickness. The silicone fluid drains to the bottom of the fan clutch, locking it up and causes the roar. Starting the vehicle and then driving away will produce the fan noise until the fluid is evenly distributed to the clutch and the fan goes into idle mode... There is no damage to the vehicle, but can be a customer annoyance. I have been accused by a neighbor for storming out of my driveway at high speed as he hears the roar of the fan and thought it was the motor at high revs. So I parked his sorry ass in the passenger seat and we drove sedately down the street with the fan roaring until we hit the end of the block where the noise faded to nothing while sitting at a stop.
Ahole had a sheepish grin on his face...I bit him farewell and told him to next time file a formal complaint with the HOA...I would delight to embarrass him publicly. We have not spoken since as he sees me he turns to hide in his garage. Problem is the fan is very loud. This can be corrected with a redesign of the fan clutch, but it would appear that Ford decided this was a risk they would take on customer complaints. I personally think this should be fixed, but I have no horsepower to force a change like I did when inside the company. I know who the decision maker on these matters is and he is the most technically incompetent, unethical boss for which I ever worked. If it is really troublesome to you, file a complaint with Ford customer. Enough voices crying fowl may force action...likely won't fix your vehicle, but forces the company to spend $ to fix the problem.

Air have noticed the dull roar as well. Thank you for explaining it. My 4 cylinder experience is limited to 70’s and early 80’s Japanese car / motorcycle engines. None of those had the Ranger Roar. I was just associating the Ranger sound with a modern turbo charged engine. No biggie.

Luckily, my neighbors never Complain about engine noise. Between my Harley Fatboy no-baffle exhaust and both my aftermarket Mustang exhausts, I assume the sound of the Ranger is quieter for them.

Luckily, I can leave my house and go downhill for at least half a mile before I need to fire up the engines when I care to. I usually use that exit when it’s an early morning workday.

Hi John,

Okay...a bit of a back story. We were plagued with this fan noise (a whine) on the Uziui (sp?) fan clutch on the Aerostar. At that time I had NVH for Aerostar and Econoline. Usui was non willing to entertain a fix for the morning sickness unless we ponied up $. So I decided to cobble in an Eaton fan clutch on the Aerostar and Usui caught wind of this (heaven forbid that this would be leaked outside Ford :)) Next thing I know, Usui came to the table with a no cost for Ford fix for the fan clutch, which we put into production along with a quieter fan from Usui as well. Golly gee...wonder why they changed their mind...maybe they would loos e the business... So I got the gold star, but the real people that got the gold star were the customers of the product. The Usui fan became a recall issue due to fracture of the fan blades and I tagged the new fan clutch to the recall so customers got the fan clutch as well as the "fixed" fan.... Win/win for Ford and the Customer...

You keep going on like that and this forum is going to force you out of retirement and orders on the next gen 'Schilke Ranger' will outpace any 'Shelby Mustang' by miles. Rest In Peace Carroll.

does anyone else experience a semi roar with a perceived lack of power when you first take off in the morning. seems to correct itself after about a 1/4 mile. if so does it have to do with the turbo? this is my first turbo. and does letting it warm up longer matter ?
Feels and sounds like you are in a gear that is too high. Yep, it's pissed me off since the day I got it. It's almost like having the choke out on old cars but without the response.

I think the roar makes it sound like a TRUCK, so I drive it like a truck. Then when it’s stops I drive it normally.

I took a different approach, buy enough property so you don't have any neighbors at all. One neighbor was so bad he ruined neighbors for me for life...so I fixed the problem.

We had an '06 Chevy Colorado do the same thing. It is mechanically engaged at all times, so could the viscous clutch in the Ranger's fan just be locking until it warms enough for smooth operation? If I remote start my Ranger about 2 minutes before driving it does not make the sound.

I use the remote start at the front door, by the time I walk down the 75' driveway the fan is normal. It's fun to freak out the covey of quail that feed on the olives next to the driveway...you would swear they heard a cat in the bushes the way they scatter.
