I pulled my air dam off and looked at the location, and design of the part. It is only for mpg/drag purposes. The radiator area is separated by its own air dam that opens up just below where a front license plate goes. Removing the dam does not impact air flow to the radiator. Hope this helps!
DO NOT follow my example, but I have run mine about 20 to 30 miles past "0". However, I drive fairly spirited, so when the light comes on I drive more reserved. I think it may calculate the mileage based on recent driving habits, so when I chill out I get a little bit of grace, ha ha.

We had an '06 Chevy Colorado do the same thing. It is mechanically engaged at all times, so could the viscous clutch in the Ranger's fan just be locking until it warms enough for smooth operation? If I remote start my Ranger about 2 minutes before driving it does not make the sound.
