Never in my life have I seen such destructive rain in Hawaii in my 71 years as a resident.

Maui was particularly hard hit last week, however the rainfall in Honolulu as I am composing this is setting records as we are under another Kona Low.

Search YouTube to witness the absolute destruction happening.

I was just reading about this on my homepage. There's still more heavy rains to come over the weekend too. Thoughts and prayers for everyone there and stay safe my friend! 🙏

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/more-230-people-rescued-amid-113900181.html

More than 230 people rescued amid dangerous flooding on Hawaii's Oahu island

Dangerous flooding is impacting Hawaii's Oahu island, prompting more than 230 rescues, "catastrophic" damage as major rains pummel the area for the second significant rain event in a week.
Overnight into Saturday, a Flash Flood Warning has been in effect for life-threatening ongoing flooding on Oahu as emergency management reported flooding and closed roads on the windward side of the island due to earlier flooding.

The heaviest rain is expected to continue through Saturday for most islands, with the Big Island getting the heaviest rain on Sunday and thunderstorms possible at times, which may include damaging winds

Additional rainfall accumulations between 2 and 7 inches are likely through the event this weekend.

Authorities said widespread damage has already been reported to homes, roads, schools, airports and at least one hospital on Maui, where patients had to be relocated. The full financial impact is still being assessed, but early estimates suggest losses could surpass $1 billion.

A still from drone footage of Wahiawa Dam in Hawaii the morning of March 20, 2026.

This is sad to see. More devastating pictures throughout the Island.

Mahalo Dave for your kind thoughts!

Thankfully, I live in a section of Honolulu which is not prone to flooding, in an area 3 miles upland of Waikiki Beach.

The images you've shown are from the central and northern parts of Oahu known as Wahiawa, Wailua and Haleiwa, as you can see stormwater runoff infrastructure is non-existent or was severely overtaxed.

For those who served in the Army here, Schofield Barracks is in this area, but it is much higher in elevation.

Damage will surely approach 1 billion dollars, no doubt the insurance companies are panicking.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated, my thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Unfortunately, flooding is not typically covered by insurance. Limited flood coverage can be purchased through FEMA, but due to the expense most homeowners don’t buy it unless it’s required by a mortgage company. The lack of insurance, in large part, is what makes flood events so devastating to communities and slows the recovery.

You are absolutely correct, however given housing costs in Hawaii 95% (if not more) single family homes and businesses are under a bank lien.

As such lenders are requiring flood insurance for those properties located in flood inundation zones, however flooding was so severe and widespread the those living in non-inundation zones experienced catastrophic flooding, these poor souls will probably suffer tremendously.

As much as I hate to say it, some of these people will soon become homeless, although the local family core values and culture is to take care of your family and friends runs very deep here so
I hope that these people won't be living on the streets or beaches.

Of another concern, I digress, is underwriters cancelling homeowners insurance policies for homes of single wall construction homes here in Hawaii, particularly those constructed from redwood. This was the construction system of choice dating back to the early 1900's here, there was no need for building wall insulation back then, although the latest building code requires it.

I shudder to think of the day to receive notice that my homeowners insurance policy has cancelled on my 65 year old single wall redwood constructed home.

Hope you and your family are safe. My Daughter still lives in Kailua, and my brother is in Honolulu. Talked to both a couple days ago and both are good along with extended family.

Back in 1988 was that last severe flooding I remember. We lived on Kihapai in Kailua back then and we had to swim out to higher ground. Pretty nuts!!

Mahalo for your concern!

I live in lower Palolo and was not affected much with Mondays midday deluge, however homes further up the valley were.

Manoa was particularly hard hit with that event, many homes flooded and cars floating/bobbing away like little bumper cars...

Indeed it was, it was probably the worst storm to hit the State that I've ever seen and I'm 71 years old.

What's really sad is that many home/business owners did not have flood insurance simply because their areas are not considered flood inundation zones.

Mother Nature changed all that this past Monday.
