Hi Everyone!
I purchased a used '19 Ranger earlier this month and have had a few odd issues I'm hoping there may be some advice on. I'll try to be brief. 4D XLT currently at just over 30k, it was 27k when purchased.
In a recent long-distance camp trip, the truck started to make a buzzing noise on acceleration. From what I can tell, this may be normal, but I certainly never noticed it during long test drives or the first few weeks. I popped the hood to look around for something loose or rattling. I noticed the coolant was lower than the min mark on the overflow reservoir and took it in to a dealer. This was 1,000 miles and halfway into the trip.
The dealer only confirmed that there was coolant leaking from somewhere, but didn't seem to know where or how - just that it was lower than the min. Their first call was that the head gaskets had failed, but they backtracked and said the tech had not confirmed that theory - they didn't know why. They topped it off and told me to keep an eye on the levels on my way home. I kept an eye on everything, having driven a car with failed head gaskets a number of years ago. It didn't changed during the 1,000 mile drive home, or in the 1-2 weeks since.
At a camp site on the way home, the truck started to make a strange, electronic/metallic noice - almost like an alert - from the front of the engine near the radiator. I linked a sound file - it's very quiet in the recording but not that quiet in person. It would make this sound every 30 seconds or so. I turned the engine on and off and it stopped. I've heard this sound intermittently since, but it's not consistent.
I took the truck to my local dealer yesterday to have these issues checked out. They completed a pressure test and checked for coolant leaks - they didn't find aynthign wrong (the first dealer said a pressure test could not be completed with a warm engine, the local dealer said that wasn't true...). And of course, they could not replicate the strange noise. The tech listened to this recording and had no idea what to make of it.
Anyway - I would appreciate everyone's thoughts or advice on how to proceed. If anything, having a tech say there is no coolant leak should be comforting, but it's maybe even more worrisome...I have very stressful memories of my old car with leaking head gaskets and multiple water pump failures...
Thank you!
