Same here. Wife's Mazda almost always catches me by surprise - I rarely drive it and at a corner in the neighborhood where you slow down, I nearly launch myself through the windshield. Every time I do, I don't need coffee for a few hours! =DI had my local Ford Dealership do a brake fluid exchange. Ran about $110. Good peace of mind - fresh fluid and bleeding the system as well. The pedal felt better after. I think the nature of our Rangers is that the brakes do not "grab" and are not as sensitive as other vehicles I have driven. When I get in my wife's Wrangler, I almost put us through the front windshield the first time I hit the brake pedal, until I get used to the feel as it is more sensitive and takes less effort compared to my Ranger.
My old FJ40 always needs a double pump if you want to stop in a reasonable amount of time. But that's due to drum brakes and leaking front axle bearings. =(
Soupie's brakes are definitely soft feeling to me, but they will stop. The softer pedal makes me think of driving a Lincoln Town Car in the '90s!
