I use a kuat Nv 2.0 hitch rack for longer trips and a tailgate pad for shorter trips (under an hour). I am looking at getting a shell so will be just running the hitch rack when that happens. As far as brands, best deal is a Saris Superclamp. Super easy to assemble, made in USA, works with 2 inch or 1 1/4 hitches out of the box, lifetime warranty. Only draw back is the rack moves around a little bit more than the kuat or thule xts. I went kuat because it matches my wife's subbie (lol). But it is a really nice rack. It has a repair stand and is really stable. I manage a bike shop so I see a lot of different brands and home made designs. Hitch racks are the easiest way to go, but pricey.

Very interesting design... I was sort of considering a tailgate pad but the went out the window pretty quickly. My current plan is a hitch mounted platform rack like the Thule T2 Pro. I wonder if this rack will clear a tri-fold tonneau cover. It looks like it will but I would definitely need to confirm that before considering it.
31" from front of bed to the rear tire. Its a large 29r megatower. I think plenty of room for any sort of flip top or rolling cover.

Fit and finish of the rack is nice.

That's awesome!! The Megatower is huge! Lol. I'm excited to finally get my new Bronson out soon!

Thinking about it, there's not a lot of room behind that back wheel. I think I'm still going to go with the hitch mounted rack. I like the idea of having full cargo capacity (especially with the tonneau cover) while transporting the bikes.

For my truck I actually did an in-bed DIY rack for $40 (probably could've been cheaper) just with a ratcheting cargo bar and some fork mounts:

Used it multiple times with road bikes and heavier mountain bikes and it's worked like a charm! If anybody wants the specific parts just let me know and I'll send you them.
That looks awesome, can you send the info if you don't mind???

Sure. I used these fork mounts with that special U-shaped attachment; doesn’t matter what brand or anything as long as they have that attachment part.

This is the ratchet cargo bar I used. It works great for up to two heavy mountain bikes, but beyond that I’d suggest a heavier duty one. It can be a little flimsy feeling but it’s sturdy in the end.

I would say most of the people i ride with have the same style as MTB-BRUH, its way more efficient for shuttling then having to remove a wheel. Especially trying to remove a large thru-axle is a PITA anyways.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Have done it both ways but looking for a hitch mounted lock on bike rack for security and simplicity.
I have two e-bikes so they are heavy, I use a Hollywood E-Bike rack, holds 160 lbs.

Been looking for a tailgate pad since I got the truck just over a week ago (I got a truck SPECIFICALLY to be able to carry my bike hanging over the tailgate). Have tried three without luck so far, including the Yakima one from Ford, but none have worked with the rear view camera--the 5-bike evoc and Fox versions I tried completely covered the camera (why does Ford mount the camera so low on the tailgate?!), and the Yakima one slightly obstructed the camera by blocking the rear bumper and the first 3' or so out from the truck on the ground (the box on the ground in the camera screen is about 3' from the back of the truck)

I found THIS half-width, 2-bike pad from evoc, and it looks promising (good review HERE on YouTube).
Hoping that 3rd times' a charm!

Sean..

Man, I've been doing this wrong. I just lay the bike down in the bed of the truck... haha.
