I have a 2022 Ranger XLT. Today the automatic headlights decided to stop working, then after driving awhile, they started working again but stopped working when I turned the truck off then on again. After a few minutes of driving they started working again. Has anyone had this problem? Seems like a short somewhere in the system. I don’t have a Ford dealer I trust… otherwise, I’d just take it to them.

Mine tend to trigger depending on the conditions they start in. So if it's a bit dark they come on immediately. If they start when it's bright they tend to lag before coming on. Opposite for turning off. Not sure if that is what you are talking about. Maybe a sensor has some well placed dust on it to be annoying?

I used mine for about a year and finally just decided to turn them off. I live an area with winding roads and a lot of hills. They never seemed to work quite right.

Are we talking auto brights? Because the auto lights come on just fine for me. But it has to be really dark before the auto brights starts to work consistently. The hour or so when I need it most for picking up deer eyes require me to force the brights on.

Auto high beams, or the dusk-sensing headlights? I find the auto high beams to be iffy at best, but the dusk sensing headlights work just great. Check to make sure you haven't got anything covering the sensor which (please correct me if I'm wrong) is in the center of the dash, at the bottom of the windshield.

I tried the auto hi-beams for a couple of weeks and found them to be very annoying. Constantly up and down. I took care of my frustration by turning them off in settings. I have the same feeling about rain sensing wipers and they are turned off too.

Even my wife found both frustrating in her Jeep and they are turned off there too.

I tried covering that and it didn't do anything for the auto high beams.

winding hills , winding hills with street lights? street lights in general? is it full dark? my don't work if ambient light is still light enough to see the difference between trees.

Mine flip off if a street light is to bright, or even if a sign has way to much reflection material on it and my head lights hit it just right.

combine with speed, and loads of secondary factors saying they don't work right is tough.

+1
OMG hate that.

Don't have my Ranger yet. But recently rental cars I've driven that have auto high beams drive me NUTS! When my Ranger arrives, that nonsense will be turned off ASAP. Ditto the rain sensing wipers.

The sensor in the center of the dash is for sensing ambient light to turn the headlights on. I beleive the auto high beams uses the forward facing camera at the top of the windshield. There is also a sensor on the from of the rear view mirror, that may be for the auto dimming rear view mirror, that I love by the way. I also beleive the auto high beams do not work below 30-35 mph, so most places with street lights should not affect them. I like how mine work mostly. The occasional bright reflective sign does trip them off.
