I like watching sports on TV, and when there is a break in the action regardless of the sport, I usually have an alternate channel cued up on "Last Channel" and surf over during the commercials. I don't drink beer, need an insurance quote, have dozens of maladies that need medication with dozens of side effects. So. I was watching the Michigan vs Wisconsin Hockey game and punched up the Barrett Jackson Collector Car Auction during intermissions. Did I go through some time warp where the US dollar was devalued below the yen? I get that these are "Collector Cars," a euphemism for "Garage Queens" but I was spellbound at the hammer prices, none of which was below $100,000USD while I was tuned in. A 1967 Buick GN hammered for $165,000 I think it was. Even considering a full rotisserie restore, that's about a hundred grand high in my book. a '70 Mustang Boss 429 with a Godzilla crate engine (IIRC) hammered at a the fire sale price of $120 grand. I have a 2009 Mercury Mariner. I'm thinkin' if I invest couple three grand in a set of Fuel 22's and some whitewall 335/35/22 tires, I could put it in the BJ ring and get at least 60 grand; it is a one owner, after all, original paint, too. sheesh.

Badgers lost 6-2. What's on the Golf Channel...

I've never gone over to Barrett Jackson but we go to Mecum every year since it started here. Much more realistic pricing and while they have their "spotlight cars" there are many affordable ones there.

I saw a Jeep 392 at Barrett go for $150,000 the other night and this Bronco for charity went for $500,000!

That's the caveat with BJ or Mecum: "collector" car. The driven cars are much more reasonably priced. I remember Mecum hammered Steve Mc Queen's original '68 Mustang used in the movie "Bullitt"(one of 4 used) went for 4.3 million.

All of the cars Boomers longed for as teens but couldn't afford are now outrageously priced due to to dwindling supply and the fact that there are a lot more wealthy folks in the 60-80 age range than any other.

There's people with some deep pockets out there.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/first-edition-2023-corvette-z06-193226623.html

The first 2023 Corvette Z06 70th anniversary edition to roll off the retail production line went for $3.6 million on Saturday at Barrett-Jackson.

The weekends are always big for the annual auction in Scottsdale, but the chance to own the first 70th-anniversary edition of America's sports car was sure to draw crowds. And have bidders reaching deep into their pockets for VIN 001.

The corvette was auctioned for charity, with all the proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. Another $100,000 was donated to the cause, taking the total raised to $3.7 million for the charity that supports military families.

People who have to count their money in their wallets before bidding go to Mecum.
People who all they have to do is raise their pinkey's go to Barrett...
When the buyers premium reaches the combined yearly income of 5 people you know...well, you know your watching Barrett.

I work right on Cactus Rd. in Scottsdale...not too terribly far from where the auctions are.
Whenever the events are in town, a lot of people break out the "oldies but goodies" and drive them by the guardhouse, and sometimes come into our community with them.
Always cool to see the nicer old cars come and go in the neighborhood.

Most on the BJ auction are one-of-one built or have been over restored and never see pavement. My neighbor has a 1965 Studebaker Hawk and a 63(?) Lark Wagonaire Most in fair repair and driven. The coolest one in our town belongs to a guy that bought a 1966 Mustang Convertible new and picked it up right at Dearborn. He has a picture of it coming down the assembly line. I don't know if he took the pic or not: probably, we weren't so security conscious back then. The car is bone stock and about 70,000 miles.
