Irrespective Ford owns the issue, be it a poor design or subpar quality from the vendor, assuming the part was properly designed to handle the stress it's subjected to then something was amiss with quality checks of the supplying vendor, if the latter is the case the contract for the part should have had address to remedy for supplying sub standard parts - instead the owner of out of warranty vehicle bears the burden. Somewhat similar occurrence with the airbag debacle, but since it's a safety issue the owners are spared the expense of replacing the airbags.
DT,

You have no clue what is going on behind the scenes at Ford on issues like this. Your beef is to get free remedial fix after the warranty expires. I can assure you that with your approach it would be unlikely to result in any help...

So contact a TV class action lawyer and initiate a class action suit on Ford. Just like folks did on the air bag...guess what...didn't work...it was Takata...and they when belly up...but Ford rose to the occasion and tried to remedy the issue....

Your insulation of poor design may be correct as there are just tons of Rangers out there with the problem... it would not be the first time a problem was "white washed" by Ford. That said, this problem did not bubble up in testing which is usually the case when the program white washes the problem away.... Is our testing perfect...not really...but it is pretty good. Sad that this testing was not good enough to have tons of prior generation Rangers running around as they are all in junk yards, suffering an early grave....
