several years ago my aunt hit a big fat buck. finished her truck and put her and one of the kids in the hospital a couple days. she had the deer whistles and extra lights, no help i guess. she had a brute of a truck. suburban 4x4 3/4 ton diesel. the deer came over the front end and into the windshield. after seeing her truck and banged up kids i decided id drive really slow at night in deer areas with the floods on. pisses some folks off. but they are not paying my repair bills. im happy to let them pass.

During the early 70s, I traveled extensively in the Rocky Mountains. I never had deer whistlers, driving lights, or deer guard. I never hit a deer or any other animal. But I hit a skunk in the middle of town, while driving 30 mph! Read into this, anything you wish!

Had a set of deer whistles on my 93 ranger when I lived in the Sam Houston National Forest / Big Thicket areas of Texas. More deer out there than people. I never hit a deer or came close to hitting one. But I had tons of friends that did.

Was I just lucky? Did I have the only set of Deer Whistles that actually worked? Who knows... It's purely anecdotal and I'm sure your mileage will vary.

Food for thought when dealing with insurance.....you didn't hit the deer. The deer hit you. Makes a difference to some insurance policies.
If you hit the deer, claim that it committed suicide by intentionally running in front of your vehicle.
Before the authorities arrive, scribble a suicide note signed with the deer's hoof print and leave it on the roadside. :like:

skip the deer whistles. use the money to install some really wide beam powerful lights so you can get a good view of the places deer like to hide waiting to jump out of in the dark. my amber wide flood lights have saved at least one white tail this year and a stack of cash from leaving my pocket for repairs.

the ditch lights rock for deer spotting at night ........

I've had a set of deer whistles on the shelf in my shop for over 10years.
Not one deer has entered the shop or even come up the driveway.
They seem to work for the following as well...(anecdotally)
Luckily the Arc didn't have them!

The only thing you can do is reduce the odds of hitting an animal....and that's by slowing down.
And looking hard for eye-shine.

The TC in NB has some impressive anti-animal fencing put up over the past 20 or so years.

Yeah, take down all those deer crossing signs and replace them with car driving signs that face the woods for the deer to see.
Should have this, or similar, facing off roadway every place deer live.....

In line with the logic in some of these posts....

Driving deer infested roads is dangerous, so you should go as fast as possible. Faster speed = less time spend on road = safer.

If caught going slow and packing a long gun, sure. It would make one look mighty guilty. at highway speed it would a tough sell for an officer to give me a ticket. I dont hunt deer any more. I could simply show the officer that I dont posses a hunting permit for deer surely they would see the logic that i could not be spotlightin ? I hear the new color for night hunting is a green shade. supposedly does not spook critters that do not get the light daze.
