This is a lightweight canoe but I carry my 85 lb sit on top duck hunting kayak in the same way.

I've been thinking about getting a platform over the cab so I can shift boats (and other things) farther forward and have less hanging off the back of the truck.

We have 16' sea kayaks and tow a small camper so the boats need to be further forward. Have the Adarac ordered but the M(low profile) version. Also have Thule roof racks for the cab. I see a mod to have an upright support of some kind for the bed rack. Need less snow to make that happen.

No pics but went with Malone SeaWing (with Stinger) carriers . I already had Yakima J carriers for my old Subaru but with rails atop a canopy, its just too high and awkward to get even 11' recreational kayaks up on the J styles. I'm 6'4" so not a short person. Also, the truck top is too high for my wife to be of help trying to cradle a boat into the J style. I can do the Malone SeaWing style by myself, no problem.

With the Malone, I can load them from the back of the truck, tip the bow into the extendable 'stinger' and just walk it forward. Boat lies flat, right side up, hull side down so a little easier to wrangle the straps. Also, a little less of a wind sail and lower profile with the boats lying hull down. Easier to get down as well as up compared to the J style.

I really, really hated dropping the big cash on new carriers when I already had the Yakima Js, but J carriers that high up are just a royal pain and probably an accident waiting to happen.

Mine goes in the bed with a couple of straps to hold it in.
