Is there something different about Cali rats?
Left Coast, probably Vegan and like the Soy coating on the wires, the good news because they are vegan they are weak in body and mind, and we know they are not Armed LOL and easier to deal with than our N.Y rats that will kill you for a bite of a hamburger ....

I also have a Ford 8N Farm Tractor that sits in the wood line since 1952 exposed to everything and never had rat damage?

Hey, I posted this in the California section because I don't need or want a wrong (coast /environment) solution.
Rats chewed on my new foam engine cover! I am not sure I would have seen it except I had painted it.
I went the the web first, and was disappointed in 90% of the articles, 90% focused on long term storage or garaging it!
I agree with the peppermint idea, and I'm thinking mothballs, and since I am vacationing for a week I put a bit of wolf urine, yes it is a thing,

to stop coyotes if you didn't know.
Anybody have a trick that works?
I am in La Mesa San Diego, but back to a small long wild area, and their are lots of critters!!!!
Red paint ?

Peppermint oil works, I got a small metal box and magnet from harbor freight tools. Soak the cotton balls and place it on the engine bay.
I like the box and magnet idea... I had field mice chew up some wires on my tractor and had to bring a generator and iron and fix a bunch of stuff.

I have been using cotton balls and peppermint oil for a while now. Seems to work. I also trap them with that roller for a 5 gallon bucket it works well. They can be had on ebay cheap.

This is my peppermint cotton balls and magnet setup. It's smells good in the cabin as well with the peppermint.

I just use rat poison and traps when ever I see them mile away from the yard. They do tend to follow old "smell tracks" up to two years. Just put few poison baits and traps to those walkways and after few years set it up so that any dark ditch has at least few of em.

And on more active side, use thermal.. it spots all critters. And helps in lead poisoning.

Normally my 2005 Honda Odyssey normally parks there, and it had rat/mice turds, so it got washed away. I'll try some peppermint
