does ford frequently test overseas products on US roads tho? if it was destined for australia, i'd think it'd be there. i could be wrong and probably am, but that seems weird. the spy shots taken were snapped testing in Michigan, I believe.

Good call - those def appear to be Michigan Manufacturer plates. Would seem silly for all road testing to be in an environment that isn’t the intended market. But who knows, maybe that’s the norm.

Regardless, that test mule does have a very functional bed.

Hmm interesting, Ford has probably noticed how many people are buying the hideously expensive (over here) Rams, Silverados, and Tundras to tow big caravans and boats. They're expensive because they are imported new in LHD from the US, and then converted to RHD by local 2nd tier manufacturers, and then sold as new cars with factory warranty by the relevant dealership.
And you can already buy an uprated tow capacity kit for the Ranger here which doesn't actually raise the tow limit over the current 3,500 Kg but does let you do so with a full bed. ie raises the GVM.

Yes that's an option fit here on the current Ranger which 85% of private buyers get as it's only a $3000 option. The standard fit engine is a 2.0 bi turbo diesel which is admittedly no slouch at about 210 Hp but the V6 diesel is a powerhouse turning out ~250 HP.

Was looking at this on Ford Authority sounds like it will have a 3.0-liter diesel
i was wondering what engine the US model would add. the 3.0L diesel is such a ford choice. not because it's a bad choice. i wanna be clear about that. it's a ford choice because the diesel will scare away some buyers who don't wanna deal with it, which will prevent it from really eating into F-150 sales so badly. that's my guess!

i was semi-hoping they'd put the 5.0L V8 in it, or even the 5.2L voodoo. that'd be wild!

edit: not semi-hoping -- i was dreaming of it, actually

5 litre V8 would be brilliant, there are a few companies over here who will do that Ranger conversion for you with a Mustang crate engine.
It became popular here because some idiotic Ford manager (who I hope was later put in the stocks, flogged, and summarily sacked) thought it would be a great idea to release the 5G Raptor (which you guys never saw stateside) with the 2.0 bi turbo diesel as the ONLY engine option.
The Raptor was a fantastic car in every other regard let down only by the shitty engine choice.

The current 6G Raptor gets a 3.0 litre bit turbo V6 engine which is quite nice, so perhaps that is the engine you might get in the US. I think you see it in the US in various Lincoln and Explorer models.

Well when you start discussing Govt rules, they never use 10 words when 100 will do the job so:
I'll try

In Australia:

Quoted verbatim from the federal standard, most states more or less follow the federal standard with some variations, for example Queensland doesn't specifically include proper small trucks in the light commercial vehicle category, as per the federal standard, but they are still regarded as such, (because they can't overrule the federal standard) and you can still drive them on a standard car licence, (because they have a GVM of =<4,500 Kg) whereas New South Wales does call them a light commercial vehicle.

Vehicle definitions
Light commercial vehicles are motor vehicles constructed for the carriage of goods or specialised equipment
which are less than or equal to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass (GVM). These include utility vehicles, panel vans,
cab chassis, and goods carrying vans with a GVM of less than 3.5 tonnes.
The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) define light commercial vehicles as Category NA vehicles: light goods
vehicle with a GVM not exceeding 3.5 tonnes (for example, the Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger).
Light passenger vehicles are motor vehicles constructed for the carriage of persons and contain less than 10
seats, excluding motorcycles (two and three wheeled vehicles) and buses (10 or more seats).
The ADRs define three light passenger vehicle categories:
Category MA: A passenger vehicle, not being an off-road passenger vehicle or a forward-control passenger
vehicle, having up to 9 seating positions, including that of the driver (for example, a two wheel
drive Mazda CX-9 or a Toyota Camry).
Category MB: A passenger vehicle, not being an off-road passenger vehicle, having up to 9 seating positions
including that of the driver, and in which the centre of the steering wheel is in the forward
quarter of the vehicle’s ‘Total Length.‘ There are no currently certified MB vehicles. The first
generation Toyota Tarago was an example of a category MB vehicle.
Category MC: A passenger vehicle having up to 9 seating positions, including that of the driver, that is
designed with special features for off-road operation (for example, a four wheel drive Mazda
CX-9 or a Nissan Patrol or a Jeep Wrangler).
Detailed definitions can be found at: Vehicle Standard (ADR Definitions and Vehicle Categories) 2005 made
under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989

However there is a class of :"light trucks" ie things like Toyota Canter, Mitsubishi Fuso, Isuzu, etc mostly cab over proper small trucks designed for load carrying, which can also be driven on a standard car licence up to 4,500 kg GVM, although most of them used to be popularly referred to "5 tonne trucks" They were de-rated by the manufacturers to 4.5 tonne so anyone could hire them - very popular as moving vans and couriers.
This is where the new Ranger Super Duty would fit.

Heavy Commercial vehicles have a GVM of over 4,500 Kg and require a truck licence.

Sad for you, the Everest is a fantastic wagon, I've toyed with swapping my Ranger for one off and on. All the advantages of the Ranger and a station wagon rolled into one.
