I like how they try to include Tincup Pass as a brutal pass. Been on there and it's not that bad at all.

everything is relative in off-roading. Tincup is not where I’d send just anybody in a stock truck. I know it’s not the rubicon but it’s not an easy road in my opinion.

With the exception of tires most stock vehicles would be able to do Tincup Pass. Hell I did it in my 1993 Pathfinder that had saggy worn out suspension and worn out tires.

Spent a few days in the Grand Junction area, on Sat saw a big gathering in a field and it was an off road expo, saw a lot of tricked out Jeeps and a few broncos and some custom made off road vehicles with a short wheelbase and tires so enormous there was little space between the fronts and the rears, somewhere north of 24" of road clearance. Grand Junction on the way to Moab so plenty of off roaders around. Saw more Ford Broncos than Rangers but a whole lot of Jeeps.

Drove Tincup Pass a couple times years ago in my stock ‘99 Ranger 4x4 SCAB. I mostly remember that it wasn’t the roughest road that I took that little truck on. Imogene Pass is the only other one on that list that I’ve been over.

I live in the vicinity of the first two mentioned in the link...the Alpine Loop and Imogene Pass. There was a major rock slide that had covered a small portion from the Engineer Pass side of the Alpine Loop a couple years back. The small section impacted by the slide had been opened again but now with a Class 5 rating, as much of the rest of the Alpine Loop is Class 3 with a few Class 4 areas at the most. Conditions on Imogene can also vary from year to year. Most recently, the County has been grading some of it to make it safer. There has been some high alpine development on mining claims with yurts, teepees, etc. and that has lead to more attention to roadway maintenance. I agree with the crowded comment. The trend around here has been the side-by-side rentals and that has resulted in a lot of fast driving and roll-overs. There have been some deaths here, sadly. It's certainly different than the 1980's when I first discovered this area and it was all about crawling with CJ's and Broncos. Times have changed.

Unfortunately anywhere you go you are bound to find a side by side that is usually going too fast on the trails that we should be going slow on. A few months ago I ran into that in The North Divide Trails by Divide and Florissant. Thankfully no one got hurt, but who is to say the individuals learned their lesson.

Drove the million dollar highway from durango to wherever it turns into 50, gonna be a while till some of those roads are passable, but 550 already thick with tourists, some who drive like sh*t, most notably those from the Lone star state. Come july/Aug 550 will be one to avoid.

I'd second your point about crowds.

For those looking to get away from the popular trails here check out CoTrex. The app is available on Android and Apple. It's all of Colorado's trail systems so it's a busy map, but once you figure it our it's really easy.

Agreed! CoTrex is great. I wish some of our nearby states would develop something similar. Big plus, you can save the maps and still view them on your iPad when you lose coverage.
