Ok, old thread, I know, but I still don’t understand how the current Ranger got labeled as the 5th Generation Ranger? Wiki says we are 4th Gen even though they show that there are 8 (US) iterations listed on their page, with the Gen 1 getting 1 facelift, and the Gen 3 getting 3 facelifts. What gives? How does a new generation start or end? How did we land on 5? I’m confused.

I doubt it has anything to do with the ROW, which is the same T6 platform as our current Rangers, and itself has undergone 3 facelifts. Matter of fact, the next generation Ranger is still designated as the T6.2 (2nd iteration of the same T6 platform), so basically, the same bones. So if it’s not from a facelift, and not from a new platform, how does a new generation get identified?

Ok I think the term Ranger for Ford trucks originated in the F-Series due to them being used by the National Park Service. Then the name Ranger was so popular they created a whole new series called Ranger departing from the F-Series with a whole new smaller line up. I could be wrong but that’s how I remember it from my dad who would be 97 today. He was a KC plant assembler and quickly became a Ford mechanic and racer until he retired. That’s my take (Mike Rowe voice)…

I bought a 1968 Ranger F250 from my dad with a cab over camper in 1991, it had over 500,000 miles on it. He would rebuild engines and transmissions like most who would just change spark plugs.. He painted it black with Imron paint and I put another 140,000 miles on it. Great truck, it had 25 gallon saddle gas tanks, one on each side plus the rear 21 gallon tank. It damn near cost 400 bucks today to fill up. I thought 100 bucks back then was expensive to fill up..

Ranger name has been around for many years.
First was the 1950 Ford Panel Truck, converted to 4 wd, and named the Ranger.

Then there was the Ford/Edsel Ranger from 1958-1960.
1965 Ford had the F series Ranger.
Then the 1983 Ranger.

Imo , the "ROW" shouldn't have been getting our beloved FORD Rangers ( as American a company as it can possibly get, Ford , the history , the war , all of it , ) while we stood on the lots scratching our heads looking around for our trucks, and still today, last in line after every other land mass has Rangers digging up dirt on foreign soil ...
