Hey, fellow Ranger owners, this is my first post, I'm so sorry it's horribly written.

I have owned my 2021 Ranger for about 2 years now, and I really want to upgrade the radio to the 8-inch version. But at the same time, I can't afford to drop 1-2k for the kits from 4d. So I was wondering if I could just rip one out from a wrecked Ranger of the same year model? Is it play-and-play or do I have to get it reprogrammed? Also, I have heard many others say things along the lines of facia or AC vents needing modification for the upgrade? Any and all help is appreciated.

If you have researched the 4D Tech (upgrade) swap then you have seen the install video, when they reference the (By VIN#) at ordering all they are doing is -programming the As-Built Data to the FCIM (module) there are VIN # data lines in the module.

So, get your As-Built data from Ford Services and then when you install the new unit.
Change the data lines to exactly your (As Built) data lines.
You may have to tweak some other As-Built data lines in these modules to get everything to work without issues.
ACM / APIM / FCIM, as these modules are set up for your current (installed) system.
You will be swapping everything that the 4D Tech video shows and the only difference is that you are using (used parts) and you will have to use Forscan to change the As-Built files where 4D Tech has done this for you via (pre-programming) the module.

4D-Tech install video Link:

4" to 8" Factory SYNC 3 Upgrade Conversion | 2019+ Ford Ranger [Apple CarPlay & Android Auto] (youtube.com)

Link to Ford Services: As-Built Data Files

Index - FordServiceInfo.Com (motorcraftservice.com)

You can use this Link: For the As-Built data file breakdown as for what each line actually is.
Word of CAUTION - this is a Ad supported website - DO NOT DOWNLOAD or OPEN any LINKS it will install a web browser adware.
When you are on a pop-up that only has (OPEN or DOWNLOAD) click on the (X) in the RH Corner of the screen or the (CLOSE) Tab
This will then show you the info you seek.
I am pointing this out as it took me over an hour to remove the Ad-Ware add on browser extensions (MY MISTAKE) for not paying attention.

The main As-Built data Lines that have the VIN Specific data are:
FCIM
7A7-02-01 - Vin # 1-5 In Hex Decimal Format
7A7-02-02 - Vin# 6-10 in Hex
7A7-02-03 - Vin # 11-15 in Hex
7A7-02-04 - Vin# 15-17 in Hex
This is what 4D Tech is programming for you, you need to change what the (used) one has to your Vin# using the As-Built data files you get from Ford Services

Has anyone ever said you’re a certified badass individual…? Because you definitely are.

For a Ref and Part Names:

The APIM is mounted on the back of the screen (display) aka Sync Module
The FCIM is Intergrated into the Control Panel (Bezel) the FCIM is just a circuit board that integrates with the APIM via a connected cable
The ACM is the module that is shown mounted under the display screen but never removed, this is the actual radio (audio) unit (receiver) - or Head Unit

So, think an old school head unit except the ranger has the display separated from it vs a complete assembly (all in one) and your button controls are moved to the FCIM as well.

So, salvage yard parts are used instead of the parts from the kit, the only thing you need is the wiring adapter harness for the install and then get it properly programmed with the As-Built data files.
