No question is dumb IMHO.... but I didn't have to ask my sales guy.
I Smoked the rear tire(s) pulling out of the dealership on the test drive!
He just smiled and said "it goes pretty good, eh?"
Yup.

My salesman was actually a pretty cool guy. He has been with Ford for 32 years, and he jokes that he is a slow learner.

Why such a question?? As this is my 3rd Ranger (1995 and a 2005) this should be a no brainier... I get it. BUT the salesmen said during my test drive of the 2019 edition, that this all new Ranger was just the opposite!! Front wheel drive when in 2 wheel mode and then when you goo to 4 wheel it turns the rear wheels on.

At the time it sounded odd but I was going to buy it anyway so I did not pin him down. But it would be nice to know for sure.. and who better to ask than the members of Ranger5G.

What say you??
This an excellent example of why the only thing you should believe from a salesman's mouth is the price, - oh wait a minute.

Ironic isn't it there are many differences between countries but car salesmen and politicians seem to be the same everywhere.

The 2nd question I had was if they came in a standard transmission.
You can get a manual trans in Aus, trust me you don't want one if you were to get the same one. It's a six speeder and looks good on paper but not a very strong transmission, When fitted with the diesel Ford deliberately de-rate the engine in the first 3 gears compared to the autotrans, so the engine torque doesn't tear up the gearbox.
Also they often wear out well before the warranty period is over. Some people have replaced manual trannies several times during the warranty period.
If you want a good one take it to a transmission specialist and have them replace all the bearings and bushes with quality aftermarket ones.

So sad really, a Ford Bronco I owned many years ago had a New Process Gear gearbox made in New York, that had a cast iron case, and monstrous guts that lasted the life of the car, and I put 500,000 Km on that car.

I've got a 6 speed and so far all good and it's kicking out 520NM of tourqe and 200hp at the back wheels i am getting the box and diffs beefed up

He that's great another Stralian! Nice! Those are some decent numbers from the 3.2. Yes it seems that the manual 6 speed box is OK once the factory weak bits have been swapped out. Also seems a bit variable too, some people have had no problems, and others on their second and third boxes. Haven't heard of too many problems with the diffs. Maybe the front CV's if you combine more power and a largish lift. On the Newranger forums being an Aussie I take it you are a member, there are quite a few threads devoted to it.
How about the clutch, it seems it's a bit marginal as well on the diesel once you start upping the ante.

The easiest way to prove it is to do a quick start in sand and see which tires spin. It will be the rear every time as this is a rear wheel drive truck until you engage 4WD!

Being a salesman is a 40 hour/week job. It's not something to "dabbles" in. As a salesman the job is to be able to discuss any vehicle at the dealership at any level the customer wants to talk. If a customer is not in the showroom, study those things. And as someone noted, if the answer is not known..."I don't know, let me find out for you and get back" is perfectly acceptable. Want to have me turn and walk away just ask me, "What will take to sell you a vehicle today?" My answer is always the same, "A salesman."

When I picked up my truck a year ago I asked the service manager if the Ranger had the vacuum system to disconnect the front axles/diff at the hub as does the F-150. "Yes," "Are you sure?" "Yes." First tire rotation showed me that is not true. We will talk next time I'm back.

Guess I had a salesman that was a special breed. He didn't make up stuff. I asked him a few questions about the transmission and rear locker and he professed no knowledge and would have to either research it or have me out to the shop to ask a mechanic. I was impressed.
