To sheer off grade 8 bolts something else in the rear end would implode long before you saw that happen.

Point well taken. I have only seen them on a hay bailer.

So were these missing on the front or rear driveshaft?

I can't quite tell from the pic if that's the front differential or the output from the transfer case.
