I'm not an off-roader, but my understanding is that a solid axle acts like a lever. When one end is pushed up by the terrain, it pushes down on the other end increasing traction. I'm assuming they can be stronger as well.

I've never had a car where the headrests didn't interfere with a forward facing child seat, but usually the headrests could be removed and reinstalled easily.
