At least it’s just a tiller and not a bunch of broke trucks sitting in your yard!![]()
All of that mess just to get to this $5 axle seal... and some antiseize for the next guy that needs to get it off...
![]()
So I get it back together and need to refill the gear box, the manual CLEARLY STATES gl4 only , 85 or 90 or 140 but NO GL5 because there is a brass worm gear in there and GL5 has Sulphur which is bad for brass ... went to 5 places and then gave up and had to Amazon some, everything is gl5 now and nobody has any on the shelf...
And the funny part is I have absolutely NO USE for this big ass tiller and im not even sure what to do with it now that its running or why tf i even offered to take it...
Remove all but one of the outermost tines; you'll then have the World's Most Powerful Lawn Edger!![]()

If you are like me, you thought it was a fun project that would only take a couple of hours to fix, and you wanted something to tinker with. All of that mess just to get to this $5 axle seal... and some antiseize for the next guy that needs to get it off...

That is a prize and will run forever if you take care of it.Was gifted this ole girl, leaks everywhere and didn't run, got it running so decided it was worth fixing the axle seal, which is pouring. Drive out the roll pin and since its been covered in oil, it should slide right off! Shouldn't it ???

...Was that an intermittent screech coming from the PTO??That is a prize and will run forever if you take care of it.
A liberal application of 303 and the installation of a damper would have fixed it right up !!!!![]()
DAMN THIS "FREE" TILLER !!!
I had been starting it every other day or so and walking it around and it's been starting and running great...
UNTILL about 3 days ago , hit once and never started again. Weak and non existent spark had me behind the flywheel thinkingI could replace the magneto thingy, DISCONTINUED! and the upgrade they were showing me didn't even look like it would work but even if it was gonna be close to two hundred or more...

FIXED IT !!! And I'm now more pissed than ever because I DID NOT KNOW that I could walk into Harbor Freight and buy the whole damn thing for $149.00 and I could stop yanking on this old POS till my guts hurt...
Anyway I guess the total on the "free" tiller if I count labor, parts and pain would be around 8 or 9 thousand...

That looks like an old Troy-Bilt Tiller. Those are beasts, and easy on the back.![]()
Tiller Time !!!
10-4; rear-tine tillers for the win. That looks like an old Troy-Bilt Tiller. Those are beasts, and easy on the back.
Most consumer grade garden tillers are either MTD gas powered, or TTI (battery or electric powered.)
The Troy-Bilt lost it sheen when MTD grabbed them back in 2001..
