According to the NWSWPC, a winter storm is set to hit the Central Plains this Saturday night! ❄ Whether it’s pouring rain or heavy snow, it’s time to gear up for those winter drives.

Is your area expecting the storm’s arrival? If you need to hit the road, what’s on your checklist? Bright headlights to cut through the gloom? Anti-slip floor mats to keep things clean and safe? Or maybe snow chains and a trusty shovel?

Let’s talk winter car prep! Share your must-haves for staying safe and ready when the weather takes a turn. ?

expecting a foot or more sunday/monday in ohio.

i plan to do nothing to prepare my truck. i will wait until there's a few inches of snow on the roads and then set out into the countryside to test my tires and my skills to command my vessel of steel and aluminum. i will not take a shovel. i'll just make sure i have a coat and a cell phone to call my wife in the event she has to bring her 4runner out to rescue me. if that happens, i will be both harassed and yelled at by her.

pretty bold, but i like to live life on the edge. it's YOLO winter, baby!

All a Ranger needs for winter is good skins and a sane driver. A sage mentor once told me that 4x4's are great for accelerating in snow, but don't brake any better than a 2WD car. Keep your distance.
I had to drive my Durango 100+ miles in 4H on ice that was so slippery that just pulling off the foot feed could set me into a skid/spin from the drive train drag. So I left at 50 yds clear in front, and if I saw the need to slow down I'd shift to N and the Xfer case to 2WD and roll my speed down. I could maintain steering control as long as the wheels were rolling free. Four hour trip ending with a double Jim Beam at home.

No snow expected here in my area, but if there were snow.... <=4" drive the Focus around in drift mode (really, it's the best mode for the snow) on its snow tires. > 4" of snow, put some weight in the bed of the truck and drive gentle.

Binghamton, NY here, you seen us on the weather Ch. all the time, remember that 41" we got 2 years ago LOL
we manage :)
if its less than 2 foot some of us dont even clear it, we drive TF out over the top, I have a 400 foot driveway so 8 foot wide by 400 and 2 foot deep is 6400 square foot of snow, it would melt before I got to the end, nothing in the mail box worth seeing! hahaha

Absolutely nothing !!! Like a few others here, we are retired. Ranger stays garaged along with wife's Subi. Plenty of food in the pantry, gas cook/heat, and a whole house genny if power goes out, so, no reason to go out. Seen plenty of snow during plenty of winters, so it doesn't "do" anything for me...

Same here with us. 15 yrs retired. I won't leave the comfort of our Iowa home if it is below 20 degrees.
For 40 yrs we drove 93 miles to her parent's home for Christmas, regardless of the weather. Darn near froze once when the Pinto wagon's fuel started freezing up. They're long gone but three of her sisters live in MSP, and want her (I won't go) to drive 180 mi to visit in Jan/Feb. I risked life for her parents but I shut down any other winter trips. ....sis's never liked me much anyway so no big loss.

Its going to be high 50s here in south texas. Already getting gloomy. We are getting groceries, filling gas tanks taking out thermal underwear, gortex jackets, heaters, firewood for burn pits and planning to hunker down at home. Have meds, water, and food.
The end in nigh. Prepare for winter is coming.

We moved to Dallas/Carrollton in the mid 80's after 32 yrs in Iowa. We forgot everything we new about dealing with the cold that first winter in TX.
One cold morning I saw several snaggle tooth cars racing to wherever with steam coming from under the hood. Frozen radiators. Antifreeze is optional in warm weather, not so much below freezing.

I'm a skier so driving in the snow goes without saying. Have already had 70" at our cabin but only 2" down here in the city. I just make sure to put our winter kit in the vehicles before traveling and it stays until April.
