On three separate occasions my starter motor has spun but not turned the engine over (engaged). Straight after I have tried again and has then engaged and started. Has anyone had before? Any thoughts to problem?

Starter is bad. You could take it apart and see if something is binding or the one-way clutch is slipping (if it has one).

I'm going to second what RangerBill said. In my experience, this indicative of a failing starter motor.
Under normal circumstances the starter should spin up to speed and immediately slam forward engaging the engine's flywheel and turning the motor over.

Edit: Listen to airline tech, I play with computers for a living, not engines.
Not entirely correct.

The Bendix Drive Gear - Engages Flywheel (FIRST) then the starter spins.
