What could go wrong? It's a great concept IF they have it disabled while driving but the fact they they're thinking of putting in autonomous vehicles says it wont be. Unless it's auto mode which I'm sure can be disabled some how. I see enough people driving around eating, putting on makeup and of course using their darn phones. This would be a great feature for those of us who live on a job site and need a flat surface to work on or eat while waiting for a customer. Not while driving as there's enough distraction on the road now.

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a steering wheel that can be transferred into a non-steering position which may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on February 15th, 2024, published on September 12th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0300567.

Back in May 2022, Ford published a patent for a disappearing steering wheel and pedals systemthat’s designed to provide the driver with more space – and perhaps room to transform their vehicle into an office – at least, in autonomous applications. Some time later, the redesigned Ford Transit Custom debuted with a trick steering wheel that can fold flat and turn into a table of sorts, complete with an included tray. A new patent surfaced last March that added some features to that wheel and previewed its potential arrival in future Ford models for the U.S., and now, this newly published patent adds more fuel to that proverbial fire.

This new steering wheel design would function much like the one present in the Transit Custom, though Ford specifically notes that since it can fold completely flat, it would provide the perfect surface for something like a laptop or food, since it focuses more on ergonomics. In fact, this table of sorts could be activated based on where the steering wheel is positioned at the time, making it suitable for the person behind the wheel without the need for adjustment.

Well that puts my $10 wheel plate to shame...

That's actually would come in handy! Probably safer too. It'd be hard to drive with that thing between you and the steering wheel. Unless you were 6'10 and had the seat pushed all the way back. lol

I must confess , I've done both of those things while driving ( only one while in the Ranger though) and it's somehow safe and OK ? when I'm doing it, but other people struggle horribly...

As a motorcyclist, I feel as if I'm gazing upon my future killer.
Agreed. Already gotta deal with the road entitled folks who drive like everyone else isn’t suppose to exist.

I no likey… the f150 Raptor (gen 3 and I think the gen 2, however not sure.).
Between the driver and passenger the shifter lays itself flat with the push of a button (if you’re parked) it folds down and the armrest fold over and makes a nice little table.. that’s how you do it.. don’t mess with the steering please.

Without going into too much detail, $20 bucks only gets me there, gratuities can be quite the money maker ... Fun Fact , "Tacoma" is the most popular safe word,.I guess It brings all the excitement down...
