Would they stop you with an out of state plate? I lived in San Diego for about 2 years in the 90's while in the Navy. I kept my ranger insured in Fla an had the side windows tinted 35% an no one ever said anything.

I have not been harrassed since 80's and early '90s, when I was Hoodlum driving around in my sketchy Mini-Monster truck with 5% "Limo Tint"....My trips to Calif nowadads don't go any further than Julian.....My Daughter has lived there 35yrs. now , and her husband and the grand kids have lived their whole lives up there.... My daughter has Limo tint on her Hummer H2....They are active in the community business clubs and coach every organized team sport played....they get a pass from the local law enforcement. Once got stopped in town with my son-in-law in his Rat Rod running uncapped headers....officer just shook his head and told him to take it home...?...

I have a coworker that has seriously dark tint, but he has a medical statement saying it is because of his skin issues. He has had numerous procedures to remove spots from his body.

Just checked mine. TRNSP 70% min. And I'm in NJ. My younger brother offered to treat me to a darker tint. (on his dime) I declined the offer.

I know you can get your windshield tinted for medical reasons too. My fronts windows are totally illegal. lol They're at 20% but I've never been bothered here or in AZ or in any of the states we've traveled to. I will say they're very hard to see out of at night. I'll usually have to roll down the front windows to double check when pulling out into traffic. Plus my eyes aren't like they use to be. ?

Dave - I like how you picked the color of your Tremor truck specifically to match the snow on those mountains in the background... way to stay color coordinated. And they call us truck owners Philistines...

I would like darker tint, and could probably easily get by with it. But I do everything I can to not get pulled over for anything. Yes, I could probably talk my way out of a tint violation, but what if I was stupidly doing something else the cop found to ticket me for?
Case in point, driving home in our early 2000's Ford Taurus, a state police pulled us over stating our tint was too dark. He pulled out his tint meter (or whatever it's called) and measured both front and back side windows. I think he just wanted to see what was in the back seat, as well as see if there was alcohol on my breath (not drinking), or anything else. He just said the tint was slightly too dark and let us go.

I had my front doors tinted to match the factory rears. 20%. It is technically too dark, but... it looks great and definitely makes a huge difference to the interior of the truck. I did the same thing on my wife's Explorer Limited. The huge difference is using a metallic based tint instead of dye based. The metallic based does not look as dark as it is, which brings less attention from our law enforcement friends. I did not and will not tint a windshield. It is highly illegal and, honestly, I do not get the point. No reason to tint a front windshield unless you are doing something illegal or have a medical issue with evidence to prove it. I like having excellent night-time vision when driving, so no tint to windshield, no tint to headlamps.

I have a heat resistant ceramic film on my windshield that does carry a slight bit of tint to it. Along with the heat benefits, I also enjoy a fair amount of glare reduction both day and night, and to that end am able to see better than with the un-filmed windshield. The tinted film on all the rest of the glass is also ceramic and heat/UV resistant. There is nothing illegal in my truck or in my activities daily. I've nothing to hide...except myself...from the Arizona heat and sun.

I am aware of the new "clear" ceramic tints folks are putting on their windshields. It is better in that it does not black out the view for law enforcement, etc. I have read mixed reviews on how this tint impacts night vision though for the driver. Some have done this and hate it due to distortion, some say they can't tell much difference. As I mentioned, having the absolute most clear vision at night is of great importance, so that is why I said what I did. To each his own, but either way, be careful out there. :) And Chris, I am glad there is nothing illegal in your truck. Keep it that way. :) I spend a lot of time in the Memphis, TN area, so tinted windshields are a guarantee of guns and drugs in the vehicle..

Virginia law states minimum light transmission of 35% for the rear window and rear side windows and 50% for the front side windows. Not sure what the Ranger came off the assembly line with, but adding tint would decrease % light transmission.

1. No sun-shading or tinting films may be applied or affixed to the rear side windows or rear window or windows of any motor vehicle operated on the highways of the Commonwealth that reduce the total light transmittance of such window to less than 35 percent;

2. No sun-shading or tinting films may be applied or affixed to the front side windows of any motor vehicle operated on the highways of the Commonwealth that reduce total light transmittance of such window to less than 50 percent.;
Finally remembered to check what my factory tint is, front 70%, rear 18%. So my rears are technically illegal in Va.

I know the front windows need to be a certain % but I thought the rear windows could be any %? Anywhere I've lived was that anything behind the front windows you could go as dark as you want, even limo tint. Or is this a state by state law?

That seems odd that the state would mandate a level that would be less than just about every factory tinted window would not meet. I wonder if they make an exception for factory as opposed to aftermarket tint film.

The information in my post was straight of the Virginia Code.
