For "tearing up the desert" with minimal weight in the bed , a King/APG/ Deaver or ICON/APG/ ICON Mid-Runner system is the way.to go...
ICON 2.5 CDCV EXT RR Coilovers,
APG Billet UCA's and Billet Tie Rods
ICON 2.5 CDCV Piggy Back shocks.
ICON RTX Progressive leaf springs
ICON Universal foam...
Are you on a long travel set up???
Most with the bumper and winch, do
well with the ICON 2.5 / 650lb.spring.
Only other time I have seen someone needing a 700lb. coil springs was on a
+3.0" long travel setup...
I"ll be making the trip out there at the end of this month...My daughter and grand kids live in Julian....and they have a RV with lots of desert toys ...Can't wait....
The Coopers are very good tire....the reinforced sidewall XL rated are better for towing and aired down offroading if you ever get the itch....I have been running with the more aggressive tred Cooper Rugged Trek , a 45lb. XL Rated tire for 3 yrs, absolutely nothing to say but good things about...
Let us not forget Ford's best car / truck ever....The 5th generation Ranchero GT... 351cleveland , C6 automatic 4 bbl carb
Torino Front end styling.....only made 2 years '70-'71....After my divorce in 1991,
( ex wife got my Ranger Pre-Runner and her Honda ATC 200X) I got one to carry or trailer...
When it comes to overland builds with all the extra RTT , Racks Support gear and Bumpers, Colo_Ranger is probably the most experienced member on this site ,
I would place far more faith in his builds ,
My build and driving experience is more in the open desert Pre-Runner world ....
It"s been almost 3 years since I was shopping for 2.5 coilovers. The 6112 Bilstein's were only available complete , with top hats and 600lb springs assembled..I went with the Extended travel ICON's /650lb springs...as for the rear ICON Leaf pack...they added an initial 1.5" lift height in the as...
No need to change out your current coilovers. The 6112 Bilstein have 600 lb
spings and will support the weight of most
bumper and winch combos....The 5160 are a firm digressive shock , that will work best with a softer progressive spring pack.
The swap in of the ICON extra leaf is good for up to...
I have the APG Billet UCA's....they were only ones made for Steel spindles at the time I did mine...the ICON tubular are a popular choice at a lower price point...
.
Bang for the buck now, and will set you up for the bumpers in the future....
1) After market UCA's..When running a 2.5
Coilover at a 2.5" -3.0" preset, UCA's will insure you are getting all the travel without binding. Plus improved geometry for alignment reasons...
2) After market Leaf Spring...
I have used mine 3 times in the last year...
On an after dark solo "short cut" trip thru the desert from Superstition towards Plaster City I lost track of the road-trail and was on compass navigation in open desert, ,, I got high centered crossing a sand wash and had to perform a self recovery...
I used the LUX bright white magnetic LED's (8 of them)...Routed the cables thru the frame rails, using straightened coat hanger with cable end taped to the hanger.
I left 1' to 1.5' of slack for each cable wadded up within the frame rails for every light , giving me the ability to easily...
The transfer case output shaft angle is what it is,
Don't mess with it...After the Woods 1pc is installed the Pinion angle will need to be lowered (thick end of shim forward under the leafs) to get the Diff flange close to parallel with the Output flange angle...how much depends on the mods...
After measuring and calculating what I needed. I looked on line for for 4.0° shims.
that would be compatible with the Ranger,
Every site I looked at was back ordered, but noticed O'Rilleys or Autozone next town over had 5.0° shims in stock for the Ford F150...they were 0.5" wider than the Ranger...
My experience with my 2021 FX4....
Bought new off a dealer lot...within
first 500 miles I had replaced coilovers, rear shocks and tires (kept Ford BAP rims)
2.5" front lift . Had some highway vibration
that I attributed to the more aggressive off-road tires....6 months later I did the ICON...
