I just had my 2021 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 serviced - Transmission Fluid Exchange and Brake Fluid Exchange. 52,722 miles on the odometer. I wasn't having any issues with either system . . . just wanted to have both serviced as preventative maintenance. Transmission fluid checked out fine - no signs of debris in the system, no burning smell, good color, etc. and same with the brake fluid. The brake pedal now has more "firmness" to it, and I've always suspected that there was air in the system from the factory.

Just wanted to share my experience and cost breakdown. It's not meant as a thread to start a debate as to whether or not it was a waste of money, too early to have the service done or anything like that. If I could not afford the services, I would not have had them performed. I plan on keeping my Ranger for as many years as I can, and this will help keep my lifetime power train warranty in tact.

Thanks for reading.

Funny thing is we all choose the jobs we want to do or can't be bothered to do so no problem sharing the costs on these maintenance items. If you have the cash why not have them do it so you don't have to deal with it.

There have been jobs on my other vehicles I've farmed out because I had the cash at the time!!

Ok here's a for instince, my 2013 Subaru Impreza needs a new front cv axle. I could do it myself but the problem is the vehicle is quite low to the ground. My delemma is, can I get the axle out or in without a problem because of the needed height to do the job. So I'm checking how much a local non Subaru garage will charge as they have a lift.

Not bad pricing! I'll probably still end up doing this myself when the time comes, but that almost seems worth the money. Thanks for sharing

Nice, thank you very much for the info. No such thing as changing fluids too soon

After a week of driving, I do notice better response with the brake pedal and it does not feel as "spongy" as it first did.

Everything has been working fine with the transmission fluid exchange as well.

Thanks for sharing and I find that price quite reasonable on the tranny work. =)

Plus you have to take it in for an alignment anyway.

I am curious as to why you didn't have the trans filter replaced as well. Or did they not have to drop the pan?

The quote is $450 for cv axle +install with a front end alignment at a local garage, Subaru dealers want at least twice that, so I will let the garage do that work as I pick my battles.
That doesn't sound bad at all.

They do not have to drop the pan with a fluid exchange. The machine used to flush/exchange the fluid reads pressures so the technician can tell if the filter is starting to build up with debris. A fluid exchange plus filter change is a lot more involved. First, the fluid has to be exchanged, then the pan dropped for filter replacement, followed by refilling fluid. If the only thing done is a pan removal and filter change, a lot of old fluid still remains in the system. That's what makes the cost go up. I will eventually do a filter change as well, but the service writer said the exchange would be fine for now. It would have been nice to replace the filter too, but it really adds a lot to the cost. As it is, I think they used 16 quarts of fluid - even though the transmission system uses just under 13. Part of that comes from flushing the old fluid out and adding the flush kit. I've always had good luck with my dealership and when I walked around the outside of the building, I could see my truck being worked on, and they definitely put the time in and did the job correctly.

What is the added transmission conditioner and cleaner? A BG product?

Yes - if you click on the service record I attached, it is a BG product. BG6600 Flush Kit.

I am reviving this thread from April because I just had what the OP had done at 55k. Should I be concerned about the fluid they used? I think it is a BG product. I hope it needs some time to settle, because it hesitates once in a while now. When it shifts, it shifts nice. But I also think they over-filled it. It was probably not up to temp when I checked it, but it was above all the marks.
