so my thyroid has a few spots. doc says they are growing. wants to remove the thyroid. sounds awful to me and i dont wanna do it. esp with mom and dad to care for. if i have a recovery of more than a day or three no one will be here to look after them. or me for that matter lol. any one have an "its easier than you think" story or good result. I looked up stuff on web md and now im a feeling like a long tail cat in rocking chair factory. thanks

Sorry to hear that with everything you have had to deal with about parents on top of it. I don’t know a thing about thyroid cancer. I think all I can do is pray given my distance, but if I can do more I will.

I had my thyroid out about 11 years ago. I had a great Dr and everything went fine. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. You see some of these "famous" people who have had this cancer or surgery and act like they're gonna die.
Seriously, all went smooth for me. Listen to Dr, you'll be on medication rest of your life. I see Dr once a year now. All levels are fine with meds.
I believe I only stayed in hospital overnight and wasn't laid up at all afterward.
All the best!

My wife lost her thyroid to chemotherapy for an aggressive recurring uterine cancer. Her thyroid had no cancer but all the therapy killed it. She's on Levoxyl for 100% thyroid hormone replacement and has been fine for five years with it (immunotherapy put her in remission after multiple chemos, surgery, and radiation).

Her thyroid function will never return but the Levoxyl makes her feel normal. It took a bit to get the dosage right, but it works. Also, after much reading on NIH research, you actually can take thyroid medication at night. The standard dosage has you taking it several hours before eating breakfast, but studies have shown that taking it two hours after dinner, before bedtime, is just as effective.

Also, my wife did seem to feel a difference between Levoxyl and the generic equivalent - I'm not saying the generic is no good, just that she seems to think there's a difference.

In the beginning, she'd have some fatigue but now she even misses a dose a few times a month and doesn't feel any worse for it.

Good luck with it and you're right to have trepidation over this. But it's something that's not uncommon and many, many people take thyroid meds - I wish you the very best and, if you have a tailgate damper, that'll speed your recovery! =)

ask if radioactive iodine ablation might be an option. they basically give you a large dose of iodine 131 orally that is absorbed by the thyroid gland, essentially killing all the normal and cancerous cells. im not sure how it works today, but years ago i was a nuclear medicine tech and participated in a few of these. it does involve sequestering you in a hospital room for a few days until the radiation levels have dropped to a level where you arent considered dangerous to be around. i131 has a relatively short half life of 8 days so youre not radioactive for a very long time

Does that cause you any pain? Or affect swallowing? I hope it's benign and let us know, we're all rooting for you.

Two weeks ago, my adult daughter had a 15 cm (6 inch), 16.2 ounce adrenal tumor removed (on top of the kidney). It was benign and she's back to work tomorrow. She had minimal pain and only took two oxys for it.

Good luck!

A buddy of mine had his removed years ago and, in the grand scheme of things, it hasn’t been life altering except for the need to be on meds permanently.

I got nothing other than, Fuck Cancer.

It's affected many loved ones and I'm silently waiting for my turn.

Hoping it turns to be a mild non-event for you. ?
