Like asbestos and firebrick lined garages? Think Kiln! There is no easy or practical way to extinguish these battery fires short of sucking the oxygen out of the garage, and that is near impossible and dangerous in it own right.

I suspect the battery might not catch fire if you removed the O2, but it would still melt down and most likely catch fire when the atmosphere is reintroduced.

Pushing tech before it is ready. First adopters = "bleeding edge". Not a safe or economical situation to be in. Was that Mercedes EV worth your million $ home going up in smoke?

From what I understand EV batteries create their own oxygen. That is why they are so hot and hard to put out. Not like the old days when we put halon systems in our mainframe computer rooms.

I was also thinking halon but as we learned it does not work so well with metal fires. Works great for killing anything that needs air lol.

Like everything else that worked good, halon is outlawed now. Car companies would be really dumb if they aren't working on a containment solution for the batteries. I am sure there will be many lawsuits against them for defective product liability.

Geez, these were mandated in race cars once you get past the fire extinguisher phase. What do they use now instead? Maybe THAT'S why they can't put out these fires, they are using green soy-based suppressors.

geez id hate to be the dealer that gave out the loaner that burned someones home and put lives at risk... Gross negligence ish id say. glad no one was hurt.
this makes me more shy about EV in general. no secret i dont like them but now im worried about the folks living around me. my house is only a few yards from the next house. if one goes up in flames several could... If a premium car builder like MB cant make a safe ev how is it going to be with the lesser quality brands.

I visited this DIY solar power store and the guy was pushing Li-Ion batteries. How yes they cost more but pay back in longevity, etc. I haven't really thought about it but I suppose they could burn the place down too. I would think having a charge controller and everything would safeguard them, but then again Telsas no doubt must have their own kind of charge controller too. I use regular lead-acid batteries and they have lasted 3+ years.

I believe the EV technology has been rushed to market. If you go back and research history, you'll find countless similar examples of this. For instance X-Rays...

I read up on the enormous number of researchers and doctors who literally killed themselves playing/experimenting with X-Ray technology while perfecting it. So many died of cancer and knew that it was killing them each time they exposed themselves for the next test.

Please know that CT Scans, X-Rays, MRI's, and simple RF energy exposure ( Cell Phones, etc, ) is cumulative. If you want a long healthy life limit your exposure to these technologies.

EV tech will march forward (as does all tech), and a suitable solution will eventually be found, but not in the near term.

Look for UL listing on the batteries and contact your insurance company because some will drop you over off grid solar battery installs. Manufacturers are starting to sell outdoor battery packs with heaters for colder climates. It's a proven fact that methane produced by cow farts are one of the worst contributors to green house gas's.
Since methane is highly combustible, I propose the gov't find a way to capture cow farts, condense the farts, under pressure, and have the vehicle manufacturers start producing vehicles that run on cow farts....
Then we could all start posting about how many mpcf (miles per cow fart) we get !!!
You could even grade it....

Cow Farts=Mid Grade
Bull Farts=High Test

I have been looking into a permanent solar backup system using rack mount batteries in the basement and roof mounted panels. After researching the costs involved, building and electrical permits, tax increases, and insurance issues I have now changed my mind. New plan is to start with an old equipment trailer I have and make a portable power source that is Mobil and has zero extra expenses. By not ground or roof mounting anything and just plugging into my generator input on the house no taxes, regulations, or building permits. Plan now is a heavily insulated power room built on the trailer with batteries and inverter with fold out solar panel racks. Also my 15 kw gas generator for fast recharges when there isn't enough sun will be mounted on it. Will have enough output to charge an ev when not needed. Hopefully next spring I will have things together and start. With a 15 year lifespan at 80% discharge the batteries should out live me.
