I vividly remember the Y2K millennium bug scare. Got up early on 01/01/2000 and fired up my Toshiba laptop expecting it to crash and burn and the world going out of control. Nothing. Learned about a simple date roll back fix and the problem was solved.

Annie reminded me of this one last night. Remember decorating the Christmas tree with those huge light bulbs? Then your parents would pass out boxes of tinsel and you'd all throw it all over the tree. It was so messy and you'd find tinsel all around the house in June.lol So glad they did away with that stuff.

And the vacuum went nuts when one of those things got wrapped around the "beater bar".

I think they were made of carbon nanotubes because they were incredibly strong for their size.

They would almost cut your hands before they would break.

and the tinsel was lead based dipped in mercury!!

ok, I exaggerated slightly
Only slightly, it was lead based. Much better than the staticy milar stuff. My mother would put it on strip by strip and take it off the same way. She would drape it over cardboard and save it for next year. Waist nothing during the war years.

No ones brought up.....
Playing marbles....for "keepsies"
Cord thrown tops, the wooden ones with the steel tips.
Wooden yo-yo's.
Duncan later came out with the colored plastic tops and yo-yo's, in the 60's, but by that time I had outgrown them.

I am old but still have all my marbles from the early 60s. ( some would say otherwise)

The opaque ones on the left came from the dump. I would rip open old spray paint cans I found in the piles while my dad talked with the gate keeper. Ohhh was that messy at times but it helped grow my collection.

Ah yes, cats eyes, puries and clearies. Remember the big shooters? I remember the matches at recess in grade school.

I was never into playing marbles but I had a bunch of them. We use to use them in our sling shots because they'd go fo miles. ??

What a bag of worms this thread has opened for me. Looking through boxes of stuff that haven't been opened for years.

These were always fun. I remember playing with these at so many family picnics but sadly they took them away too.

I used big ball bearings in my wrist rocket when I first got it. That got me into some trouble when my dad had to replace a neighbors window. ?

I never got to see those and I'm sure my grandparents had them. Knowing my dad he threw them out he never saves anything.

I do remember my mom collecting the S&H Green stamps. She always had books of them and cash them in for stuff.

As one who was intimately involved in the Y2K remediation effort, I can tell you categorically that the reason it was not a big deal was because of all the hard work that was done. There were some critically bad bugs identified only months before the rollover that were fixed. Had they not been fixed it would have thrown all sorts of companies into a huge tailspin.

People say Y2K was no big deal but that is not true - had it not been made such a priority it WOULD have been a big deal. And the issues were myriad on how it could manifest itself - it wasn't just interpreting 2000 as 1900. I'm not one to exaggerate things, but this WAS a big deal, and I'm glad companies took it seriously.

Remember when gas stations were full service and had cases of dishes between the pumps? You got a fillup and could select a dish or cup from the case.

My mom got a 12 person dinner set made by Currier and Ives from the A&P store including all serving pieces. My sister has that.
I have all the NFL glasses that Mobil gave out with a fill up. Also have a couple hundred of the Pepsi character glassed given out by McDonald's when they first opened packed away in a box.
