My dad paid 7k for our first house. I think he only Made about $40 a week take home with overtime.
First house I can remember was a 2 bed/1 bath in Metairie Parrish outside of New Orleans. Dad was a real traveling salesman for a hospital supply company, going from one to another showing the companies instruments, and supplies and taking orders (ALL MADE IN THE USA). Made good money but was away from home for 1-2 weeks at a time.

I even road a bicycle without a helmet . Although I might not be the sharpest knife in the draw from all the falls but I'm still here.?
Thank goodness you survived, otherwise no one would have dampeners on their Ranger’s ?

I guess it only seems like a pain now because back then we didn't know any better. But even now there are times I'd give anything to go back to a much more simple way of life. Sometimes I think all this tech has made things worse and people much more lazy.

I do agree on the housing. My parents bought their house in 1963 for $16,000. It wasn't big I think it was 1,200 sq ft but it was in a nice town which was very safe and had a great school system.
yes the world has gotten a lot more lazy but its also gotten a lot more connected in a way as well so thats good and bad overall i dont think id change how its gone because it shows progress at least not always the best but its something.

damn thats cheap! i bought my house in 2020 and i paid 160 for a 900sqft house... it is updated and has a basement and two car garage and a very nice back yard but still most people my age cant afford that or are taking out crazy loans to buy houses less then mine...
Bought my first home in 1970. Brand new 3 bed/2 bath with patio and car-port. New sub-division in northern part of Dade Co, Fl........$17,500.00.....less than half of what my Ranger cost.
Its since been bought up and bulldozed as property got too valuable for what was on it....but back then it was considered "the sticks".
ya its wild how much houses have gone up

We had one window ac unit in my parents bed room. When it was really hot we'd sleep on the floor in their room in our sleeping bags. Can you imagine kids having to do that today? I love these modern things but they complain now if they don't have a smartphone. I've talked to many who have lived here in AZ their whole life and they didn't have ac back then. Granted it wasn't as hot but I can't imagine not having anything.
I lived on Williams Air Force Base (now Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport) as a child in the late 1950s. As I recall, we had swamp coolers.

I was talking to one of my older customers last week. She's a native here and said it was never this hot back then and little to no humidity. You could get away with just a swamp cooler and she said many didn't have anything.

I still have my Woody Woodpecker hat and letter from Soupy Sales thanking me for the dollar I stole from my mom's pocketbook and sent him. Our tv had aluminium foil wrapped around the antennae wire for fine tuning and when it stopped working my dad would pull out all the tubes and take them to Big Ben to test them and replace the fried one. Those were the days.
Wow I'd forgotten about those tube testers, iirc correctly you had to turn dials to match the tube type then warm then up for several secs , bad news to get stuck behind your dad. In college I remember going to a friend's dorm room to watch Monday night football, he had a used large screen black and white tube TV, we got drunk drinking black velvet whiskey , the TV was on the blitz and was distorting the picture, drunk and disgusted we hauled it up to the roof of the 10 story dorm and heaved it over, it made a loud crash and pieces flew everywhere.

- Cap guns that held the red roll of caps..Check
- Played out back in the fields and stream running through it..Check
- We had 3 tv channels too but had to manually move the rabbit ears. I thought we were rich when we finally got a motorized antenna on the roof. lol
I often was the antenna. “Tracy hold onto the antenna this way & don’t let go til the show is over.”

We use to play in the street all the time. No one seems to care and would patiently wait while we moved our street hockey nets. Today seems like everyone's in such a hurry and they'd just run you down or stop and give you an ear full.

Every Sunday night my mom would watch Lawrence Welk first and then we would watch Bonanza and Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom before bed. That was our TV time for the week. All other activities were outside in fresh air.

We had dinner together every Sunday afternoon, my grandparents would come over and we'd all get together. I remember there were times I was mad because we were out playing and I had to go home and thought I was missing out on something better. Boy I'd love to be able to have those Sunday dinners with them all now. ?

Born in 64', survived the blizzard of 78' wore clothes with patches ironed on, tried to stay up late to watch the b rated scary movies and most often failed lol.

Ate cold pizza or leftovers for Saturday morning breakfast while I watched the Bugs Bunny Road runner hour while the rest of the family slept in. Lunch in the summer was whatever we could pick from our fruit trees or garden.

Knew the distinct sound of a Craftsman wrench getting hit by our riding mower while Dad screamed my name in vain, I liked to tinker with my bike and take his power tools apart, often forgetting to put his tools back.

Had 4 older sisters oldest was 10 yrs older , youngest about 2 years older. They would chase me down and torment the heck out of me until I learned that I could run faster scared than they could mad! Then I started learning how to pick my battles and have a keen eye for marksmanship on rear ends ?.

We had an intercom from the house to the barn (had 3 acres) and had my 1st open carrier debacle in grade school, mom wanted the trash out and I didn't do as I was told so she keyed the mic and let dad hear mouth lol. I got the belt all the way to the burn barrel. I also learned that when given a pocket knife and told to go cut me a switch, bringing a dead brittle limb onnnnly made it worse!

Did your folks give you the "parental speech" when you complained about walking to school about how when they were young, had to walk "20 miles, in a blinding snow storm, in our bare feet, just to get to school" ?
Up hill, against the wind, both ways...
