they figured "We can't make the cars to sell so why spend time and resources that could be used for building them?" not my words just something I overheard at the board room table /sarcasm

Not cost beneficial, is my guess. There's more people living in the state of NY, then the whole of Canada.
Any time I ask myself why a company does anything, 'money' is usually the answer, either to save it or make more of it.
Actually, more than the state of New York (~20 million), more in line with California (~39 million), as we’re now at ~38 million.

But your point is well taken, it is crazy expensive to have big exhibits at the larger auto shows.

I think car culture is going down the drain so maybe Ford is ahead of the game.
On another note, ford has 2 in the top 5.

I know, right - maybe it‘s all about their new focus on trucks and because the big auto shows are in large cities.

Not enough cidiots like me buying trucks but plenty of my cuzzins in rural Ontario snatching them up. ?‍♂

How many people have bought a vehicle because of an auto show display or showing? I'd guess very few. So that, combined with the invention of internet vehicle debuts, pretty much makes attending an auto show a waste of money. Auto shows should be for unique and rare vehicles, something you wouldn't see anywhere else. Not your average Explorer or Ranger or F-150.
Just my "hot take"....

I've never bought a vehicle because of what I saw at an auto show. But I have gone to see a model that was coming because i was considering it.
I just like to see all that's being offered in a one stop setting.
From the new features of the low end Buick, to the ultra rare supercars.
Its a show....to show off
If Ford doesn't want to take part, my guess is that it will be apparent down the road if it was a good decision or not.
Win a race on Sunday, sell the cars on Monday. Probably applies to a degree about car shows too.

I've lived in DC for about 30 years and looked forward to and attended the car show here yearly. We also made trips to New York and Philly when we could. I've watched the shows gradually eroded into smaller and smaller exhibits with less interesting cars and several manufacturers withdrawing all together. DC keeps moving their date and getting stranger - 2 years ago it was "ushered". You had a set path to follow and employees guided you through it start to finish and dropped you at the exit. The auto show is a dying event and we're just watching it's last gasp.

The main thing I like about auto shows is the ability to sit in vehicles within a short period of time to compare interior space.

Went the Charlotte Car Show with my son on Nov. 18th. No new GM twins or a Ranger in the Ford area. Although there was a XLT SuperCrew Ranger in the Roush booth for $58k. Chevy did have the outgoing Colorado ZR2 for $47k. Two Taco’s in the Toyota area… overpriced, dated and easily the worst interior space of any midsize… I can’t wrap my brain around why it’s the best seller?!? Whatever, but I’m not buying! Nissan as a brand, was a no show, so no checking out the Frontier. Overall a pretty lame show… many premium brands were no-shows as well. Nice to make an evening of it with my son though (dinner afterwards)…. It has become an annual outing.

Catch-22: Nobody goes to car shows anymore because so many major players stopped exhibiting, because nobody goes to car shows anymore, because...

I think car show attendance is not even the issue here. When we answer our surveys and the Pew Market folks earn their dollars they will ask how you came to discover the car you purchased. Dealer Visit, Advertisement (TV, Internet, etc. will be segmented,) Car Show or Exhibition is a category.

They most certainly are seeing a decline in conversion, or, at very least, responses in surveys indicating that it is a sustaining or growing market. If they're seeing huge growth in other forms of marketing that is where they will pool their resources.

Source: I work with these folks and collect their data to do my job in other markets.
