thats what i tell my truck when i see a nice mustang or a raptor. im just admiring the beauty...

i know this is true, i always have a full size shovel and track boards, straps, come alongs etc. my problem is that 99% of the time when im off road i am alone. most of my friends in the area all married with at least two kids the time away from work they get is with the kids at foot ball and band or with the spouse etc. which is awesome for them, I envy them in many cases. So ive never really just HAD to have a winch to get moving again. done my share of shoveling, huffin and puffin but i know if i had a winch - just in case- i would feel more relaxed, have more fun and push things a little more. Currently im over careful off road as no one is around for me to get a pull from. id love to have a full on winch bumper with good recovery points built in but they are pretty expensive. good gear is pay to play, we get what we pay for most times. but a hitch winch would cover me pretty well.

i was thinking something like this, winch in the top spot and then the bow shackle in the lower for the winch line back to the truck. but I dont feel like the adapter would take the stress of the winch and the shackle. ???? if something like this is strong enough i could have it set up easily only spending like 100 bucks. while a replacement bumper is at least 5 times that.

THE GEN-Y hitch has a 7k tow rating.
When using a tow recovery, or winch recovery the forces you put on the hitch are steady, like a tow, so it should work.
Receivers with proper equipment on can do kinetic recoverys. With the adjustable hitch i wouldnt do a kinetic recovery, not made for it. But the receiver can be used for it with proper tools. Because of science stuff i dont fully comprehend, just know thats how it works. The loop or shackle should break before anuthing on the truck does. Butbif a recovery done properly, usually nothing will break. Always that x factor. But if done like drunk teenagers, whole bumper and unibody frames come out. So the dual hitch or

GEN Y

reciver should work

id rather go without the winch than risk damage trying to half ass a set up lol.
a few years back I worked as a emergency dispatcher and then for a breakdown and heavy recovery company as a dispatcher / service writer. we dealt with things like load shifts and tractor trailers closing off the highway etc. winch outs etc. i heard and saw too many things go wrong from bad setups or dumb users. I may have to back burner the winch thing until i get money for a better mount or rear recover point.

but how boring. the good stories never start of with "so I had a good nights sleep and didn't make a bad decision"

Living close to a somewhat heavy off road area, I have seen bumpers, hooks, leaf spring shackles, even front cross members mangled from the "let me back up and get a run at it" or the "try it one more time" the forces at hand are unbelievable, a couple of 5-7k pound vehicles trying to move one from a dead stop in a hole.
I actually used to keep a strong oak pallet in the bed of my 79 F250, I would stand it up at a 45ish degree angle leaning toward the stuck vehicle (use a stick or something) just in front of the stuck vehicle, hook up over the pallet and pull, the pallet would stand up lifting the stuck vehicle just enough to pop it out of the tire holes, worked like a charm until it finally splintered pulling a Ford Ranger out of a mud hole, more stuck than I have ever seen a truck, 5" of water in the cab, he kept it running all night as the starter was way under water, got there in the morning and thought "this is ugly", ended tearing the side view mirror right off my truck with one of the riverbed trees, got him out, but whew.

so on ebay i found one of these westin max winch mount trays listed by an estate sale company. ive seen them before but did not want to pay what they were selling for knowing it would need modifications to put my recovery points and skid plate back on. but i got this one for 100 and the shipping so i figured it would be worth the some time with the grinder and solves the rear mount winch concern.

I am thinking of adding a winch on hitch mount to my gear to bring along for days i go further or deeper than i should. Im not worried about the tow hitch being up to the challenge. My concern is the safety chain loops under the hitch tube. example : I run the winch line out to an anchor / pulling point, snatch block it and from that point return the winch line to the rear of the truck. Normally id just use the hitch for a strong hook point. but, if i use a rear winch on the tow hitch that options off the list. Is it safe to use the chain loops under the hitch for my return pull line??? I have no idea what the WLL is for those. I assume they are stout enough to handle the load in keeping with the hitch rating but that does not make them recovery point strong. I know the frame etc. but id prefer not to risk damage for awkward pulls.
thought about one of those dual hitch adapters that could use winch in the top spot and have the lower open for a bow shackle or something but i dont think those are stout enough. those would sheer and the winch would pull itself free from the adapter.
What about routing a short sling through the framing of your hitch where it parallels the truck frame underneath and making it into a kind of basket choke?

Theoretically, if you were able to install a proper rated recovery point on each frame rail, you could use a short static strap (tree strap) to construct a bridle, then pull on that. Or you could just pull on one of those rated recovery points.
