If you did get it and got the word out maybe enough backlash could get the program axed. Maybe not though who knows. In CA that attracted homeless from all over America. $600 a month iirc.

My parents paid for school so technically I do have outstanding student loans. Hmm nowhere on the page did it say it had to be from a bank and I'll argue it's discrimination...or something. If I had to bet though I don't think either of us will ever get a phone call (or any money of course). People aren't even getting their tax refunds anymore. I personally know three, one a business owner, that are still waiting.
Yes, highly doubtful. But at least it helps me to laugh about it vs being pissed.

Perhaps those 85000 new IRS agents will help folks get their refunds.

A single F-35 costs $80 million, and costs $35,000 per hour to fly.

Makes more sense to relieve 8,000 student loan holders $10k a piece, plus more as operating costs like on. We can live with a few less F-35s, a jet the military admits is too expensive and not all it was cracked up to be. Just one example.

Seems some are very selective in how they direct their ire.. I guess their working neighbors are unworthy of government assistance, but big corporations and the military get a free pass when tax dollar distribution goes that direction.

College grads are huge contributors to our economy. We need more of them, particularly teachers, engineers, scientists. College used to be further subsidized by the states, but that has receded the last 50 yrs. I prefer investment in human capital over corporate capital.

Trade program students have debt too, and we need more students in trade schools. Seems a modest incentive in the grand scheme of things.

Then again, some here don’t want Medicare to negotiate better drug prices. Same tent, same circus.

Hi Folks,

I got my undergrad by working while I went to University of Central Florida. I was a VW mechanic in a private shop... I did my homework after the day at the VW shop. Grease under my fingernails all the time...a dirty job but an honest job. Sleep was an option at that time if homework was done. I had no student debt when I graduated...Ford paid for my Masters of Mechanical Engineering....again no debt.

So how is that Art History undergrad degree and the $100,000 debt working for you?????

Keep those F35s flying....we need strength in this country...F35 program employed thousands of Engineers.... Keeping them flying employs many more too.... JMO....

Retreating to my flameproof bunker....

Best,
Phil

Not sure if pointed at me. But since you did not quote anybody else, and I'm the OP, I'll go ahead and bite. I'll do my best to not make this political.

The United States Federal government has very few enumerated powers per the constitution. None of those include paying the debts of others.

I spent a few years after high school causing trouble. Moved out of state to go to tech school at 21 on a greyhound bus with 2 suitcases. I worked my entire way through school using student loans to bridge the gap. My wife did the same, although she never finished school. Between the two of us we worked our asses off to pay those loans off. Over $30k worth in less than 5 years. Again, she never graduated, and although I did and used my education a bit, I'm just a milkman.

So forgive me, but I spent $30k on education that I'm not using. I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay for some blue haired hippopotamus' Women's Studies degree also.

P.S. I'm not for corporate welfare either. But "providing for the common defense" is one of those constitutionally enumerated federal powers. I'd much rather my tax dollar go towards that than welfare for the rich.

That's right, who's the richest? College grads or high school grads? Is it really fair to ask the kid working at Autozone to pay for the frat boys beer run?

That's not what federal loans are for though.

But I imagine you knew that.

All of this when I was young I worked and went to college and walked to school uphill both ways is just silly. Should we not have airbags on our cars because your parents didn't? Should the minimum wage be 25 cents an hour, because that's the way it used to be?

I'm not saying the government should be handing out cash to the first boy to party all year, but when the government has the ability to help, why shouldn't they?

Exactly. Send trillions in 'relief' to foreign countries or big business, no one bats an eye, dismiss $10K in a personal loan, everyone loses their minds.
Also, it's my understanding that no one is actually getting a check. They will knock off $10k from the loan. Monthly payments won't necessarily change, you will just have fewer monthly payments to make. But some idiots will want to lower the monthly payment, then pay more in interest thereby negating the $10 relief.
And let it be known. Even if congress were to forgive 100% of my loan, I still would not vote democrat.

What's not what federal loans are for?

Drinking?

Have you been to school? Do you know that good portion of your student loans is allocated for living expenses and dolled out to students as a check from the "finance office."

What do you think most college kids do when they get a $1000+ check?

This is not some I walked up hill both ways to school stuff. This real life. There are consequences for your choices.

Why shouldn't the government help? Because it's theft, pure and simple.

This is a regressive tax. The are literally taxing the poor to help the rich.

In 2022 34% of American adults have bachelor's degrees. In a lifetime men with bachelor's degrees make $900k more than those with High School Diplomas.

Even if all loans were taken solely for actual school costs it's simply unfair to ask the janitor to pay for the accountants school.

It's wealth redistribution from the poor to the rich in the ultimate form.

Exactly.

Ohh the vote buying is another retort that makes me laugh, if paying someone's loan down is going to make them vote one way or another, they aren't voters who care about real issues and would be swayed by a fancy hat, or a free tshirt. (sadly though, that's a good part of the voter base)

As a fun note, I work for a utility here in Florida, you can't get hired here above basic ditch digger without a college degree. It doesn't matter what it's in, you just need one.

Yawn, yes i went back to college as an adult, yes i know they will give a check if you are eligible for more student aide than you tuition.

Yawn.

Wealth redistribution... Is it wealth redistribution when they use your tax dollars to fix a road in another part of town?

Come on, get off the talking head talking points.

I've worked in utilities with the IBEW. If what you say is true Florida is unlike any other state in the union.

People that spout this garbage have no clue what is actually out there. There's plenty of money to be had without a college degree.

When have I said there isn't money to be had, hell I wish I'd gone to trade school.

I should also clarify, we're a water utility - not electric.

Fun fact, Florida isn't the utopia some think it is.

Considering I pay city, county, and state taxes why would it be?

My fault for assuming that was your point with the ditch digger comment.

Again though. Why should the "uneducated" ditch digger pay for part of the engineer's degree? Or even, why should he pay for the engineers' new Mach-E?

Better yet. I entered into a loan agreement for my Ranger and you're a fat cat government employee. :wink:Wanna help me pay for my truck?
