You have it wrong, if you had to split it, it's simply the two categories you mentioned without the dad/kid title.

Besides, old guys been modifying everything they have driven for the last 40+ years, well at least some of us.

I don't consider myself a mechanic, although I know the basics. And, my career background gives me great insight with respect to modern vehicle electronics. But I don't have the tools (and energy) to do a complete teardown any more. Forty years ago? No problem. So please, don't complain when you can't install a new air filter without help!
