I have a 4x2 with locker:
-- Stock hancook tires, no lift
-- Full skid plates, Bilstein 5100 front and rear, recovery gear for others to use including the stock tow package hitch (I don't have a winch), maxtrax traction boards, air compressor for airing down.

I'm looking to understand its limitations.

It's not a 4x4 :D, so am interested in very basic offroad experience, on gentle areas that a 4x2 w/locker can go on.
Here's a list I found for areas ~1-2 hours from the SF Bay Area, but reviews and videos aren't clear on whether 4x2 can do anything there.

Would someone be able to help advise, on what location could be most suitable?
If it's a popular are with others around to help in case anything occurs, that's bonus.

Carnegie SVRA
Hollister Hills SVRA
Prairie City SVRA
Knoxville Recreation Area

Before my '21, i drove my 97 ranger on poor forest service roads for many years without issue, so I can drive fine on basic dirt...but have no idea of capabilities beyond that.
I appreciate any wisdom and advice :)

Hey @jblc,

I heard Carnegie is very popular with riders so I never bothered. I've been to Frank Raines and Knoxville both of which offer ample opportunities to have fun without getting in over your head, and at Frank Raines you'll definitely have help should you need it. I only saw a couple of other trucks the one time I ran Knoxville, which isn't an off-road "park" but rather public land with trails through it.

I would strongly recommend upgrading your tires. Granted my Ranger is 4x4, but the Cooper Disco S/T MAXXes have made all the difference, plus they look mean. The electronic diff-lock is legit- I thought for sure I was gonna be hiking out from Poker Flat in November but when I hit the magic button she clawed and scrambled right up that washout!

Got a 3 week old baby so I'm out of action for a while but you get out there and send it for me! Be sure to take pics and let us know how it goes. Enjoy!

P.s. Here are some shots from Frank Raines, Knoxville and Plumas NF

There is a ton of terrain your truck will do with no problems at Hollister. There is also a neat little play area with man made obstacles. It's worth a trip out there.

Thanks for the thoughts and advice :)
I'm trying to balance mpg (which is already very low in my ~stock FX2...~22 mpg highway) and the tires, given that i won't be offroad too often.
From my understanding, any tire that is more aggressive will be noisier and have poorer mileage due to increased weight (rotational inertia). If there was one that was same noise and had the same mileage, I'd definitely get that :)

Good luck with the new baby!

I just saw this thread. I'm based in Concord and have done all the parks suggested here. Carnegie has very limited 4x4 options and is fun only if you have an ATV or motorcycle. Been there many times with my bike, but the 4x4 stuff is very limited.

I would recommend Frank Raines. Even the drive out there is beautiful. Right now it's quite muddy in the park (I just went last week) but with the rear lockers you will be totally fine if you stick to the green (beginners) trails. Just take it easy. Some of the trails are next to quite steep ravines, which is cool but can be scary since the ranger is just about as wide as the trail itself. But don't let that put you off because all the trails are in good shape and you shouldn't have any problems.

Since you said you're not very experienced and you mentioned recovery gear but didn't specify, I'll also say to make sure to bring your own soft shackles/D shackles (I prefer the soft ones myself), a good tow strap and/or a snatch strap. And of course a method to air down and reinflate your tires (which you mentioned). This would be good to test at home first, because sometimes the bigger tires on a truck can make cheaper air compressors overheat. Those would be the absolute minimum requirements. If you have the tow package on your ranger you probably don't have tow hooks in the rear (my Tremor doesn't); make sure to get a hitch-mounted shackle in that case so that you have a solid attachment point in the rear. Would also allow you to pull someone else out.

Personally I also like to bring a basic tool set, first aid kit, disaster survival kit, food/water, traction boards and a hi-lift jack. But that might be overkill if you go to a popular park like Frank Raines.

Let us know how it goes. I'd be up for coming along too, but somewhat similar to @TheBadger we're expecting a baby soon so this isn't exactly the best time for excursions. Last week was probably my last one in a few months...

Thank you, I appreciate the details :)
( For recovery gear, I have all of what you mentioned, including some others eg traction board. I use an ARB compressor that is suitable. )
