Ford wants to go head-to-head with Tesla…
We’ll wrap up today with a look at Ford’s newest venture into electric vehicles (EVs) with the F-150 Lightning truck. Here it is:

Above, we can see that the F-150 Lightning looks just like an electric version of the hugely popular F-150. There is one key difference, though – the “frunk.”

Making Use of Space Under the Hood

That’s right – the F-150 Lightning has a front trunk. Since there’s no internal combustion engine, cargo can be stored directly under the hood.

The Lightning is Ford’s response to Tesla’s Cybertruck announcement from 2019. Clearly, that announcement lit a fire under Ford.

And what I found particularly interesting is the fact that Ford is following the Tesla model almost to a T.

To start with, Ford is pricing the F-150 Lightning just under $40,000. That’s about where the Cybertruck is priced.

The acceleration capability of each truck is also very similar. The range each truck gets is about the same. And Ford is even offering a premium model with extended range. That’s a page right out of Tesla’s playbook.

The Lightning will also utilize an over-the-air software upgrade system just like Tesla. And it has an iPad-like control panel in the middle of the dashboard as well.

And get this – Ford is using the same preorder/deposit system that Tesla uses. The company is asking for a $100 refundable deposit to preorder the F-150 Lightning.

The only major difference with Ford’s approach is that it will offer the Lightning through its dealer network. By comparison, Tesla sells directly to consumers. This is a big win for the dealers, who were not at all happy about Tesla cutting them out of the loop.

And the biggest difference, of course, is that the F-150 Lightning will not come equipped with self-driving technology… At least not yet.

So this competition between the F-150 Lightning and the Cybertruck is going to be fascinating. We are looking at a clash between a radically new and innovative design versus a classic tried-and-true design.

Through 2020, the Ford F-150 was the best-selling vehicle in America for 43 straight years.

Will Americans continue to make the F-150 their chosen pickup truck as we transition into the world of EVs? Or will they go with a radically new design that’s never been seen before? Something that looks like it is out of a science fiction movie…

We can keep our eye on preorders to get a feel for the answer.

The Cybertruck hit one million preorders last week. Meanwhile, the F-150 Lightning has picked up 70,000 preorders right out of the gate.

The race is on.

All these Teslaites are in for a rude awakening here shortly when the worlds established auto makers (The same ones they love to talk shit about right now) start making EV ‘s on a wide wide scale.

The biggest complaint with Teslas is that the panel gaps look like a kit car.

I haven't looked at one since COVID though so maybe they got that under control?

I was planning on a Model 3 for the wife when she's ready for an upgrade, but the Mach-E has grabbed my interest too, along with the current flood of hybrid vehicles that are out.

maybe tesla's best endgame is to sell software to the big boys and let them handle the physical stuff. of course, that doesn't work with a 100 gazillion dollar market cap.

I think the thing that Tesla has done best is to give the market a BIG wake up call, similar to the wake up call provided by the cheap but reliable Japanese cars from the 80's.

Would any of the automakers be investing so much in electrification if Tesla hadn't proven that a real daily driver capable vehicle was possible?

I seriously doubt it.

Well, maybe in CA where the elected leaders like to legislate technology into existence.

Yes that is true Tesla has proved it can be done and they have stayed relevant.

I’m a product focused person I guess and if you dive into it there’s a lot of quality control issues with Tesla cars, mainly things with the body such as doorhandles breaking etc. because it is incredibly incredibly difficult to manufacture a proper automobile. Teslaites won’t admit to this of course, in the same way Toyota owners won’t admit their vehicles have any faults.

I love my ranger because it’s a quality vehicle and I like all the “Ford isms” it possesses. But if I felt like something were truly better I would be driving that. Example: if Tacoma‘s had better capacities and a better seating position I may very well be in one of those. My 93 Lexus LS400 showed me how good Toyotas really can be. I did some restoration on it and put 10,000 miles on it, gave it to my mom and she’s now put 12,000 miles on it!

Screw dealers. And I love the Tesla CyberTruck. It's innovative, not just an electric version of a pickup with a frunk. I'll have a CyberTruck, once the kinks are ironed out of it, for sure.

1 word Batteries.

No legacy automaker will be competing with tesla for at least 10 years due to batteries alone and that's only if they spend billions setting up new factories, and millions more on R&D to make the technology better.

By 2030, Ford expects annual energy demand for its vehicles will be up to 140 GWh annually in North America and up to 240 GWh globally.

Tesla plan to produce 3000 GWh by 2030

This means tesla will have at least 12 times as many batteries available which directly means number of vehicles for sale.

The day I can get my hands on a EV Ranger, I will buy it. I'll pay MSRP if I have to. But I don't want an F-150, too big for where I want to go. I'm also not sure about clearance on the Lightning ... it is def built for maximum aero, at least given it starts out as a brick. A little lift will help but approach angles do not look good.
