Resonators are used to reduce the frequency of the engine exhaust sound so they will be either more distinctive or pleasing.

Correct...the resonator counteracts the exhaust pulses 180° to counteract the incoming pulse....To A Degree... Helps to tune the exhaust by taking out harsh, unwanted frequencies.

I removed mine on my sport trac and the sound was way better. Never really noticed any performance difference but you could actually hear the 4.0 rumble when on the gas afterwards. even got asked a couple times what kind of exhaust I was running after.

It was before the muffler on the sport trac haha. Would have been real loud if hack sawed from there haha
