Every time we drive to ABQ, we plan our drive to make it to Gallup for lunch at Blakes. Then sometime during our stay we get a Dion's Special and just before we leave for home, pick up a dozen burritos from Golden Pride.

it was much harder to find a really good place to eat in AZ. But I will have to go with At My Place - A Filipino restaurant and Forefathers for cheesesteaks.

Blakes LotaBurger
Dion's Pizza
Golden Pride(Frontier)
At My Place
Forefathers
As it turns out, I "sort of" work for the family that owns Forefather's Cheesesteaks. Class people. I'm going to mention to them they've been called out in the forum. It'll make their day!

There is nothing in the world like authentic Mexican food from our state of New Mexico. We are famous for both our Red and Green chile...you have probably seen us in the chile wars on the news. You will never be happy with another Burrito after you have eaten one of these. You will probably resort to have them overnighted to your address or fly out to get them. If you like them really hot like us that are used to it that way, order an extra side of Green chile with your Burrito. My mouth is watering right now for one of these...even after having one Saturday morning!
  • BREAKFAST BURRITO one egg, hash browns, cheddar cheese and green chile
Also Available with BACON, HAM, SAUSAGE, or CARNE ADOVADA
Paul, dude, thanks for the tip. We're planning a road trip in Sept. that will take us through Albuquerque. I've checked out a motel for our stay that's on Yale Blvd. That's so close I can probably smell that Burrito. What's your suggestion for lunch/dinner. Something mild for us southeastern folks. :)

I've not eaten there as it was a SNL skit with the original crew, but I can see a majority of the forum claiming this as a great place (me too) ...

We go to Monterey 4 or 5 times a year. IIRC there are 1000s of restaurants on the Monterey peninsula. I usually come back a few pounds heavier each time. Silver's At The Wharf is a good place if you ever pass by Fort Bragg, CA.

My best filet mignon was probably at Gallagher's in Vegas at the New York hotel.

Hey Jim,
You definitely will be in the neighborhood of the Frontier...my mouth is watering for a Burrito just thinking about it again! "Can't stay away from those things." The best way to park is to turn south on Cornell Ave. from Central Ave. and turn left into the 1st driveway directly behind the Frontier and there is free parking which snakes around the neighborhood...keep following the signs. But it is tight so if you keep searching, you probably can find a parking space that is not so cramped. Last Sat. I found a perfect spot that was safe and was able to park at an angle. I am very particular about getting scratches on the Ranger and use paid parking if the spaces look too tight (lots of paid parking in the area).

If you are not used to hot, spicy food, I recommend that when your order the Burritos, ask to have the original green chile that comes with them to come on the side and add it as you go.

If you like Italian, the Bravo has great food, reasonable prices, a good atmosphere and there is underground parking in the complex where it is located

Enjoy your stay in Albuquerque, but don't let the Burritos burn you up :sun:

Man a lot of the places you guys have mentioned sound great. But I must admit, I am a HUGE sucker for Mexican. After hearing about the burritos in New Mexico I am considering a Taco Bell run at 11pm ? This post might have been a horrible idea lol. I sure miss my taco trucks back in Oregon that were open until midnight

Thanks for the info Paul, we'll definitely give one of those a try. And thank you also for the tip ref. parking. We'll probably be in our plastic Chevrolet, so paid parking it will be. :)

It is quite subjective for sure as one day it could be this restaurant, the next another. But, I would say that after a long day in the car (on a long road trip) we stopped at the Big Texan in Amarillo, TX. Mercy, that steak made my tongue want to beat my brains out. :)
Now I understand :giggle:

In my youth, I spent summers in my Dad's truck in the Oil Field. His area was from Dallas to the Mississippi River and Little Rock Arkansas to the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the best restaurants I ever ate at were the kitchen hanging off an oil derrick. Those old roughnecks would live out there for two weeks at a time and there wasn't much in the way of a grocery store near by. They only had one small refrigerator too. Everything was hunted, fished, or grown right near to the oil well. I was as fresh and "farm to table" as you could get. Amazing foods from Cajun families that had been handed down through generations. My true favorite is in here somewhere but it is a place that never really existed in the first place and probably doesn't count as a restaurant.

Later when we got married (not to my cousin as you might be wondering from above) we would drive from Houston to New Orleans on I-10 and then take US 90 and State Road 14 back. We would literally eat our way back to Texas stopping at any shack made out of random storm debris and leaning to one side. These were legitimate restaurants bu really only there to serve the locals. I could easily pick any one as a favorite but that was 20 years and 14 named storms ago. I'm sure the food and the people survived but the establishments are log gone.

So what's left?

Here is a true account of the downside of late night burrito attacks:
Decades back was skiing with a friend, drinking heavily afterwards, go to bed and am awakened around 2 am with this guy frying up tortillas in lard and making a bean/cheese burrito. I get him out of bed and rush him to get dressed for skiing, it was at Vail and back then you could get stuck in a long line at the base. As we are waiting for the lift he is exhibiting tell signs of a bean burrito, we get on the chair and he starts cursing me that he should have hit the head. Well nature took it's course on the lift, he gets off the chair and kind of waddles on skis held close together towards the rest room but of course it was too late. Never laughed so hard watching him do that waddle, but to his credit after going back for a cleanup he returned to later to the mtn. to ski a few runs.
Not exactly a fine dining story though

It's an old southern saying Greg. Sometimes I forget we have a quite diverse group here. ;)
