To answer your question yes the information you see in FordPass is through the cell modem in your truck to servers at Ford through AT&T and back to your phone through your provider or your home network. Same system is used for remote starting from the app. Your phone doesn't communicate directly with your phone unless connected by Bluetooth or plugged in by USB.

You can also buy a plan from AT&T for you truck so you can make you truck a WIFI hot spot. I have an unlimited national plan on my phone so I did not buy this plan. As you know your truck can connect to your home WIFI for downloading updates.

Hope this help explain how your truck communicates with you.

As I said I don't think Ford has turned on over the air updates because of all the issues they have been having getting the update right

My rig is setup to connect to home wifi with WPA personal so one time password entry and it’s good. I never used the plan from Ford. What I did do is use my phone as a hotspot and let the two pair whenever I’m in truck. So it grabs my wifi or LTE or both depending on location. My Sync updates from what I can tell were pulled from home wifi. So on screen I ask for updates, if ones available it grabs and installs it. That’s what happened with last update. Did it automatically overnight.

Similar to my setup I get in the truck and my phone automatically pairs up and my phone calls and messages come through SYNC. When I pull into my driveway my truck automatically picks up my home WIFI network and logs in. Haven't had it automatically update over my network yet, been doing the USB stick method.

Lee, This is helpful information. This is my first vehicle with any technology so I'm going through the learning curve.

I did find the latest SYNC3 software update (SYNC3 v3.4.20282) on Ford's website and installed it successfully on Thursday with a Flash Drive. It is not a straight forward process but has some unknowns that you have to figure out as you go along. It would be nice if Ford would notify of these updates at least through Ford Pass App instead of having to check their site āœ”

Rick, do you a modem on your Truck or are you using the above setup to bypass the use of a modem?

Paul,

There a couple of rather long threads about the whole SYNC update process. Reading the last few pages of them may help you understand what we have all been going through. Its been painful. Hopefully you got all the required file with your download. That has been the latest issue.

One other thing. When you reply to a post, type you reply after the last [/QUOTE] tag. It will separate your reply from the post your replying to.

Thanks, I will look at these threads. The files evidently were all there because after Confirming the update, got this message: Your SYNC update has been confirmed. But knowing how software works it is sometimes iffy if the update was actually completed even though it is transmitted and posted

I’m sidestepping the use of factory optional modem and using my own. I’m on AT&T and it would cost me 10 bucks a month to activate the built in one. Rather put that cash into mod improvements ā˜?
