That is very awesome Doc!
My step granddad was a crazy Greek from Galveston. He medically retired as a senior captain with the Houston Fire Department after falling through a 4 story building during a fire. Anyway, in his younger days he was a big shark fisherman in the Galveston area. He actually caught 2 world record fish off a pleasure pier in Galveston.
The first was in June 1937, a 551 lb Goliath Grouper. The 2nd was New Years Day 1939, a 736 lb Largetooth Sawfish. Both are still State of Texas records today and will not be broken due to these species not occurring in State waters anywhere close to that size. Gus Pangarakis was a very colorful character. We called him the "Chief"....he was truly larger than life...

I have caught my share of sharks but have never had the desire to kill any of them. I rotate between Montana/Idaho/Wyoming and the Florida keys. Fly fishing is church to me.

Cool Beens!
Our reefs out here are inundated with Goliath Grouper (commonly called Jewfish in fla.) they are protected now for some while, but they gotta reopen season on them, you hook a 20 pound gag or black grouper and they will come up50-70 ft and grab him at the boat. They were legal when I was a kid, now even the divers won’t go down without a bang stick....but they sure taste good !
Regards
Best fish sandwich I ever had is at a place in Tallahassee, FL called Bird's Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack right on the edge of the FSU campus. Fresh never frozen Grouper with homemade tarter sauce, lettuce and tomato....YUM!!
BTW...we call them Jewfish too....lol, TP&W changed it to be politically correct. ;) Honestly, I don't know any Jewish folks that were ever offended by the name of a very good tasting fish that would be considered Kosher (It has scales)....no kidding.

Dave that would be a problem !
You folks need to go try that in the surf....lol. Better use a sit-on-top. Better tether EVERYTHING to the yak too....I learned that the hard way the first couple of times I went out in the surf on a yak.....probably lost about $400 in gear before I figured it out....:crazy:s
Actually, surf fishing in a kayak is a young mans sport in my humble opinion....it will wear you out!!
Also, big difference between fishing a yak in the surf and just "yakking" out baits for shark fishing. The latter is much easier and ok for us old dudes....lol.

Boy I miss a good old fried Grouper sandwich! My parents had a house on Marco Island,FL and when I go down there was a sports bar who had great Grouper sandwich's. Nothing like a cold beer and fried Grouper on a hot lazy afternoon! ??

Mark, Im 20 minutes to a good beach to surf fish. My luck if I was in a kayak I would hook a great white shark that is mad and wanting to eat me. Big boat or from the beach is good for me. Although Delaware put out too many surf fishing permits and during the summer you see trucks and jeeps as far as you can see. The rules say your supposed to be activly fishing but too many go there to party. Kayaking is fun though, my wife and I go often. Your fish pictures were awesome !

Back in MA a 60* day felt a lot warmer than it does here, I'd be out in a t shirt. Even my gf says it feels colder here than Chicago at 60 but it is much drier here. You get so use to the warm dry heat that anything below 70 is cold now. Or I'm just becoming a wimp! ?
That's funny. I swore I'd never be hot like I was when I was in Vietnam once I got home. (Although my daughter and her husband live in Houston which is a darn close second place). Where I live, a summer day is about 65-69 avg, anything over 70 is a heat wave.LOL.. Like you say, you get use to somethings, but dry or wet HOT is just ("Well I Do Declare)'n HHOOTT!! and humidity is like a mod bonus to it

I miss going there, it's been about 10 years since I've been back down there. We were just talking last night about making a trip there in the next few years.
