So I am in the market to buy either a 2019 or 2020 Ranger at the beginning of next month and was just wondering what you guys have experienced or heard is the best way to break the engine in before putting a tune in it? Im planning on doing a tune but suggestions on how many miles I should put on it to break it in first? And if I need to run it in Sport Mode a lot or just drive in Drive or what everyone has found to be best or anything like that.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

If anything wait until 500 miles until you go to sport mode or get a tune. Also depending on what you are planning to do I would suggest going with Livernois. They are the company Ford Performance goes through to get thier tuner. It gives you some nice factory tools from the scan tool and it will adjust automatically for altitude if you ever decide to go anywhere like Colorado.

This is not 1954. No need to "break in" an engine.

The tranny will need to recall after the tune is installed as well, so no need to put miles on for that.

Install the tune whenever you want.

Houndog is right, modern engines don’t need “break-ins” like they used to.

However, most powertrain factory/ manufacturing defects rear their ugly heads within the first 2k-5k miles. So personally I’d wait till at least 2k miles just in case.

Thanks thats mostly what I meant was at what mileage would you advise to install the tune.. I just didnt feel like you would want to put it in right off the bat.. Thanks for that info.. I just put in a custom order last night so hopefully will have my Ranger by October at the latest..

You can put it in pretty much from day one if you want. The vast majority of time the engine even with a tune is operating within what would be considered normal boost pressures. So the stresses on the engine's internals is no different as long as you keep your foot out of it. About the only thing you would want to think about doing is perform the first oil change at or around the 1K mark. New engines even though do not require any specific break-in procedures still have an initial wear period. This is typically complete within the first 50 miles. The oil filter will trap the particles from that and changing it early is not a bad idea. After that you can stick to a 3-5K mile change routine.

The transmission will go through its adaptation learning phase and shifting may be jerky or seemingly erratic for 250 or so miles. Adding a tune will reset this clock as part of clearing and resetting the ECU when completing the tune. After that it will sort itself out and shifting will be much better as the system learns.
