Are extended service plans for Ranger worth the cost?

Prior to our '14 Dart and '16 Cherokee I never had major out-of-warranty issues. None that I couldn't diagnose with my Actron OBD scanner, and fix myself. But the two FCA cars, with multiair intakes, DDCT, turbo, etc intimidated me, so I purchased FCA's pricey extended warranties. Unlimited miles, payable to the value of the vehicle at the time of claim.

My dealer gave me what appeared to be a good price on their third party coverage. She said to not bother with Ford's plans. I've received third party offers twice weekly since buying my Ranger.

The Ford 3yr/36000 mi bumper:bumper, and 5yr/60000 mi power train coverage should smoke out infant failures. But I worry about the numerous controllers failing. Beyond me to diagnose. Pricey to replace. Seems most third party plans last until 100K miles, and I don't know if they cover drive train electronic controls.

Anyone know more than me?
Thanks.

I'd be very leery of third party underwriters in the coverage they offer, sure they will give you a list of what they do cover but the better question is what they don't.
Flood Ford sales rep Gardiner explained the reason why they can offer Ford's coverage on the cheap, they sell it a cost plus $100.00
I presented their prices to my dealership's F&I guy when I bought my truck a week ago, there was no way he could match Flood's prices.
I intend to buy Ford's Premium Care 8 year plan online from Flood, which essentially is just 5 years coverage given Ford's 3 year bumper to bumper warranty.
My primary concern is the electronics on board the truck.

Curious, what deductible (if any) you looking at?
I'm swaying towards zero or fifty.

The 3rd party warranties are basically an insurance contract. If you are 110% happy and confident with your dealer solving any issues that happen after the factory warranty expires, then you'd probably be okay. But do not bank on a different dealer (if you're out of town when a problem happens, you move etc.) honoring that warranty. The dealers sell them because they are making more money. IMHO, a reputable dealer shouldn't offer them as a first choice on a new vehicle. Only as a less expensive ( if that's the case) second option. If they said anything like "it's good everywhere", I'd probably buy the truck elsewhere.

I’ve never bought one for any vehicle. I’ve been able to fix everything I’ve had issues with so far and I sell parts for a living so I can buy at pretty good discounts. If someone wasn’t very mechanically inclined and didn’t have a good connection for parts I think it’d be a good idea to buy the extra warranty.

I ended up getting the extended warranty through ford directly. I showed them the online 3rd party ford flood warranty prices and they matched it. Rolled it into the loan with zero % interest. 1500$ for 8 yr 100k warranty ford platinum protection Aka bumper to bumper.

Excellent advice!
The Lincoln-Mercury/Honda dealership where I worked as a mechanic sold a 3rd. party warranty as an alternative to Ford's ESP (as it was called back then), that plan, while affordable, would nickel and dime the poor customer for things such as lubricants, coolant, refrigerant, gasket & seals, etc. Ford would cover these items...I'll peruse Ford's plan for coverage as I suspect that has probably changed.
And yes, I really felt sorry for customers who purchased their cars and such warranties off island , the dealership flat out refused to honor them if they were not underwritten by the plan they pushed.
Many of these customers were members of the armed services, all the more I felt badly for them.

I disagree, I am a retired mechanic/firefighter with many years in the automobile service industry (40+), the warranty I plan to buy is for all the electronics on board my 2020.

For example, the 2000 Ranger S/Cab I sold last month experienced issues with the body control module, it would not go into "sleep" mode and caused a parasitic drain on the battery.

A-1 Cardone listed a rebuilt module for $200, plus core and shipping, Ford considered the part obsolete.

Lucky for me a buddy's son dabbles in such repairing such modules, he was able to locate the faulty IC and other parts causing the problem.

I may not get so lucky with my 2020 eight years from now.

Curious, what, if any is the deductible for your plan?

Got the same plan from ford. Deductible is 100$
Looking at 8years/60K miles with zero deductible for $940 myself.
When I sold my 2000 S/Cab last month it had traveled all of 94K miles, all urban driving.
