What did you do WITH your Ranger today?

[Blue Streak]

I loaded my Tortoise and wife into the Ranger and headed to the recycle transfer station to drop off oil from changing the Ranger's oil. Then to Big O tire to pick up the RV tire that I ordered so I would have a new spare after facing a blowout on the RV last October and stuck on the side of the road for 4 hours. Then back home. Secondary reason is to shake up Tito the Tortoise to hopefully help a constipated Tortoise not to be constipated. The Ranger did its job well and Tito is not constipated any more.... Cleanup in Aisle 2...

Shure hope Tito was in the bed.

Hi Larry,

Not in the bed...in the passenger footwell. Delayed reaction...Tito was in the house in the Great room by our partnership desk on Margie's side. We have tile floors....

Looks like Tito is all better and he made a new friend. I just saw him pass by my house.

There’s a lesson in this somewhere for all of us

Yes! Buy the Ranger Raptor, drive it like you stole it and forever be regular!!

Not quite as exciting as the RR references and conversations on here, but after work I had to stop by the bank and get some cash and this weekly run lol. The picture speaks for itself.

Happy and Safe Travels Drivers!

Took my sister around to dealerships to test drive new SUVs to replace her 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, which was totaled in an accident a couple of weeks ago.

We were test-driving the 2026 Santa Fe on the highway when it just lost power; even the rep didn't know why. At the time, the car was in "Eco" mode, which appears to be the default setting. I took it over and drove it back to the dealership in "Sport" mode, which seemed to work fine.

Anyone hear of this happening? By the time we got back to the dealership, the service department had closed for the day, so no diagnostics yet. Is this a Santa Fe issue or a hybrid engine issue?

I drove a 2020 Escape Hybrid for 4 years and nothing like that ever happened.

She should get a Ranger with a topper!! All the perks of an SUV and .... it's a Ranger!!

[LaBalbe]

That new Santa Fe is sharp looking. Not the best situation for the sales person.

No, I kinda feel bad for the guy. I think that the service department is going to get an earful on Monday. We noticed that he didn't even offer to drive the thing back, so we think that he was just as shook up as my sister.

Was it in limp mode or did it just shut right down? Did it die on the QEW? I was pulled over in the breakdown lane near Stony Creek once (ice from a semi hit my Passat) and it really was unnerving with vehicles flying by.

She hit 100 km/h, we heard a "pop" not unlike when the turbo on my Ranger died, and then it started to rapidly shut down. We pulled off on the edge of the QEW in Oakville, shut down the engine, let it reboot for a few minutes, and then she tried again. The second time, we didn't even get 500m, let alone to 100 km/h, before it started bleeding power. We managed to limp it to the next exit doing about 30 km/h on the shoulder, with the sales guy telling us not to go over 50, pulled off into a gas station where we were able to switch drivers.

Yeah, definitely unnerving; in fact, I think that's the only reason she didn't trade seats with me on the spot. She was too terrified to try to get out of the car on the highway, because the shoulder's not too deep there. The fact that we lost power right in front of a FedEx truck (not a semi, but still) certainly didn't help matters.

I decided to bypass "Eco" mode entirely, put it straight into "Sport" mode, and took it back to the dealership. I drove it conservatively, but still managed to go a little over 90 in "Sport" mode before we got to the exit for the dealership, so I wasn't able to test the 100 km/h limit that triggered the incident, but I did better than the subsequent attempts in "Eco" mode, which leads me to think that the issue might be specifically related to that mode and/or the hybrid combo.

Unlike the Ranger turbo issue, where I was able to limp it home for nearly 1,500 km, I don't know if I could have gotten the Santa Fe to go as far with this issue, but then again, I don't know that I couldn't, either. Certainly, I wouldn't have tried that distance with the Ranger if I hadn't gotten a mechanic to run a diagnostic and tell me that it could make the distance so long as I nursed it al the way back.

We did have a moment of levity later on where we reflected on how ironic it would be to get rear-ended during a test drive to replace a vehicle that was totaled when it got rear-ended.

Likely it's a one off situation but I would want to know for sure. A sensor or something went rogue!

Yeah, I asked the sales guy to let us know on Monday when the service department is back in and has a chance to take a look at it, but in the meantime the damage is done. To be fair, she isn't the biggest fan of the Santa Fe's redesign; it's too boxy and feels too much like a station wagon to her to begin with. The only reason she decided to test drive it was because her 2017 Santa Fe had been really solid, and would likely have gone a few more years if it hadn't been totaled.

Now, the uncertainty of what did happen has tainted not only the Santa Fe for her, but Hyundai in general and possibly even hybrids. The fact that so many makes (at least, that we looked at) either don't offer hybrids at all or only for a few models as opposed to their entire fleet was already raising questions about whether hybrid was really the way to go, and she was real gung-ho about it when we started out on this quest.
