We just bought a 2023 VW Taos SEL with LED IQ Lights. Yes they are adaptive lights. They will turn towards the direction you are turning. They also are self leveling head lights. Either by load of the vehicle or cresting a hill. They are awesome head lights. American auto makers could learn a lot. Yes, when you turn the vehicle on they do a little test “dance” to make sure they are working correctly.

Before I ordered my Ranger I considered a Taos, good looking vehicles. They don't offer an R-line trim though and that's the only trim package VW currently makes that I would get.

WAY before 2000 - Sealed beams stopped being mandatory in ?1983? with the introduction of composite housings. Continental Mark VII was the first US vehicle with composite headlights (and 4 channel antilock brakes!).

I had the opportunity to drive around Germany some visiting in-laws and automotive technology is on another planet there. The US is behind in just about all major categories in today's environment it seems, not just automotive lighting - but that's an entirely different conversation.
I quoted as Sealed Beam Style not directly Sealed Beam. Sealed Beam Style were still OEM into the 90's. When you look at the turning point if about 98' 99' the lenses housing went to clear plastic Composite which was safer. Look at Japanese Imports compared to their home market as a reference. I said the US is behind on lighting and safety as well, and I could write an entire novel on the blunder of the IHTSA that failed to prove the US had the best safety standards. It has to just annoy automakers that they have to seriously dumb down for the US market.

We had like a 2015 or so Lincoln that had headlights that turned with the wheel.

Yeah some think he's the devil but, I have Starlink internet which is the only way I can get internet and am very thankful. I live way out in the mountains. My parents have two Teslas not because they're hippies (1000% not!) but because they're low maintenance cars and my parents are elderly.

Thanks! It’s a great car. We are very happy with it. We had 3 Tiguans before it (including an R version. I think the “R” versions have been downgraded over the past years into just a trim level. I liked when a “R” was actually a true model like the R32 of years past. But anyways the TAOS is a great car, loaded with everything.

I just corrected a date, I didn't disagree or argue with you. I straight up agree with everything but the date - opportunity was provided to the US and was not utilized.

You stated "mandatory" and sealed beams, regardless of "style" stopped being "mandatory" in 1983. Laws changed in the early 80s to allow composites and shape changes to forward lighting - that's where those little GM rectangles were born. "Sealed beam style" is still a "sealed beam" no matter how it looks. Yes OEMS continued to use Sealed Beams into the 90s (the last sealed beam "style" was the 2017 GM work vans) bc they were cheap and plentiful. the point I made is they didn't have to starting in 1983. Composites have been safer since they were allowed in 1983, but they weren't cheaper.

100% Agree. My mom had an '03 R32 when I graduated high school and it was WICKED. She grew up in muscle cars and was a very skilled driver. She'd school a LOT of people real quick with that little thing!

Don't be a hater. You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs, and Musk is making some very unique advances in areas that have broken quite a few eggs, but they are undeniably successful.

EVs as a vehicle class, certainly suck, for a lot of reasons. But the Teslas suck much less.

These adaptive/dynamic/matrix headlights can't become pervasive fast enough.

I hate driving on hilly/twisty mtn roads at night and getting nailed by projectors as soon as the car coming the other way is visible and those lights are pointing straight in my face because of the nature of the roads.

Agree to disagree. Not an EV fan at all. But if I were to buy one, the brand in question would not even be on my list. Not just because I loathe the founder, but because their build quality is subpar. Hell, their organization is border line dysfunctional. And some of their business practices??? No way would I support them with a dollar of my money.

As to being a hater, nope. Just being realistic about that particular company.

Suggest you and your parents visit a Ford dealer and order a Mach E and a Lightening. :like:

Technically, it's 2 different distinctions. R models like the R32/Golf R here in the States, and in Europe they also have Tiguan R, Golf Estate R (wagon), Arteon R, Arteon shooting brake R (another wagon) T-Roc R and Touareg R, which all get more HP, bigger brakes, sportier interiors, lower ride height and bigger wheels. Then there's the R-Line which is just a trim package that has sportier body accent's and black interior and usually black wheels.

We never get the cool cars here in the States ?

I'm not a huge EV fan myself but I do like the PHEV and really hope the next Ranger has this version.

As far as Elon goes he's created a great business and while I can't speak for his Tesla business (I know nothing about it) I wouldn't buy his solar panels. I know he gets A LOT of government subsidies for his solar/EV's but I don't see anything wrong his his business practices. These are out there for anyone to use and he's taking full advantage of them. I always say "don't hate the player, hate the game". :wink: ?
