I got my Florida funeral director license a couple years ago. My dad passed away in 2021, both my wife's parents last year. We only stay here to help my mom and when she's gone we're outta here.
Mom however is determined to live forever to keep me from leaving. All the heart disease, strokes, and diabetes are on her side of the family yet she gets none of it.
My fear is with so many people moving to Florida I might not be able to afford it.
Just make sure you really research it good because Florida had got really expensive over the years. I remember I wanted to retire there and had bought 4 lots there back in the mid 90's. Then they had a really bad hurricane season and that caused insurance and property taxes to spike. Plus with all the baby boomers retiring Florida has seen an influx of retirees especially ones from the east coast as it's a quick drive or flight back home to visit family.

A good friend of mine recently retired there and is now kind of regretting it. He said it's not much cheaper there than it was back in MA. Sure a few things are like property tax (he had a huge house back in MA in an expensive area) and no heating bills. But everything else is the same or more especially the electricity because he now has a pool and being so hot and humid they run the ac all the time.

I'm thinking if we live inland and not near the coasts it would be more affordable. My folks used to have a winter home in Ft. Myers but got to where my dad couldn't afford two homes any more so he sold it in 2016. I didn't finish funeral school in time to get a job there and move in. The whole reason I went back to school at the age of 53 to be a funeral director was so I'd have a marketable skill to move to Florida. I hate winter and I especially hate the lousy Rust Belt economy that I've been battling for my whole working life.

Al, for now we decided to stay. After doing a lot of online searching and going to AR it's financially best to stick around for a little longer. While we do love AR and still might end up there one day I'd like to still visit a few other areas like TN and KY. I'm just not a city person and this place has grown so much over the past couple years. Even with the rate hikes they're still building everywhere here, now it's just taking longer to sell.

But it could be worse. I could move up next to you and have my hands full trying to sneak over every night to get to your tailgate.?

With Minnesota taxes you won't be able to afford any kind of useless tailgate contraption for my Ranger. But I would love to have you as a neighbor. Come on up!

Being a moderator you should have thick skin. The cold can't penetrate thick skin so you can live anywhere. :p

It's definitely thick and has thickened up over the past year. Seriously it's 72 outside and I have a t shirt and a long shirt over it right now. When I was back east I'd be at the beach in this weather. lol I think it's the blood that's thin now.

I have yet to put on long pants this winter. I DID put on a sweatshirt because it was 14F (that's -73C for the canucks)
