Maybe a security plate sort of like this, bent to shape and then riveted in place?

What about an alarm as soon as the tailgate is messed with? Many vibration alarms out there for motorcycles and such , scare them away before ANY damage...

I'm going to have to peek inside the tailgate and see if there is a simple way to add a security plate behind the handle to prevent the screwdriver technique.

The tailgate is aluminum. It'll pop off easy.
I don't know if I agree with that. Besides all the thief is used to is prying at that point.
If it is blocked off, then he may give up. Remember the thief has to work fast. If it is no longer a simple pry and pop, then it takes time.

I've got more than just tail lights at stake. Sometimes I have stuff in the bed.

Redesign the remote lock to pop open the tailgate. Have the handle as a decoy. I'd do something like that but I don't have the ingenuity.

Probably room inside tailgate to mount a vibration/motion sensor , I'd rather they run away BEFORE they start prying around on the tailgate handle ...

That's a great idea. I might have the ingenuity.

I'm back to the external guard plate. It's the only way to tell the thief "Nope - you can't pry here...move along now."

I work in LE, so I get to see a lot of thievery. It's usually just about making things harder or more tedious that makes them move on. They have a method they're comfortable with, anything outside of that isn't worth the extra time or risk and they move on.

The security torx are a good plan, I did that. On the tailgate, I dunno, that's tough. I think you would almost need a stamped steel piece that fits the cutout under the latch to prevent the prying.

A cheap fix for a little bodywork to fix a pry is better than $5k worth of damage and theft so at least if they get to the security torx and stop that's still a win.

We use security bolts for license plate theft here. Same principle, it's not that you can't get the bits, they just don't bother. Move on to the next vehicle it's easier.
