But why face forward to take in more rain? I know it has baffles but why test it. The ram air gain will not help with all the bends. Cleaner air if snorkel facing back. Also fewer bugs pulled in and filter stays clean longer.
Simple explanation is the intake facing forward acts as a ram induction.

If the intake faced toward the rear it could and most likely would, create a low pressure zone at the air intake because of the air flow over its surface and starve the engine for air...

Originals did not face either direction I guess.

To be honest there is quite a bit between speculation and real world environment use.

The Snorkel kits were designed primarily for dust, water crossings and the like on our adventures just happens to be a beneficial by product. By that I mean great, you have a snorkel kit and can use it for water but if you cannot maintain water ingress into the electronics or other portions of a vehicle like differentials and axles. The snorkel is of little use at some point.

South Africa and Australia has many vehicles that come stock with a snorkel kit from the dealer or even factory in some platforms. The roads in between are often stretched on more than what most of us here would call just a backroad. Following too closely behind one another can have some pretty damaging or sometimes catastrophic effects on a vehicle

The Toyota "Land Cruiser", Land Rover "Defenders", and others not necessarily high-line UTE's, but those two specifically come with the snorkel opening's facing across the windshield. There really isn't a specific direction that seems to benefit more than another however, forward does provide a proposed ram-air function. A few brands even offer a omni-directional intake with a pre-filter which may open up further conversation or debate on whether on or if direction of the inlet really matters or not.

To be water-safe is a combination of preparation of a couple things, one raising of the vents on your axles or differentials, ARB makes a rather nice and more than functional axle vent, capable of up to 4 inlets/or/outlets. But those on a budget or a complete DIY individual, there are simpler hose and filter kits you can make on your own.

Knowing when a body of water isn't safe is a topic of its own.. but knowing where the electronics in a vehicle next is important as well as having an E-fan setup that you could interrupt vs a fan clutch setup can minimize the chances of damage. Your ignition system whether DIS (Distributorless) or not needs to be addressed as well. The OEM airbox is something we happen to recommend more frequently. Mostly due to the fact if you had to source parts for repairs on the road or out on the trail. You are more likely to find stock or OEM parts than some aftermarket counterparts when you really need something.

All of the Safari/ARB snorkel kits have a intake that is easily adjusted with a simple 8mm bolt on a large hose clamp fitted around the top. I happen to know the owner with the Blue 93 Ranger below keeps an old 8mm Snap-on nut driver in the glove box for such needs rare as they may be.

Last photo may not be for the squeamish of drilling 4.25" holes into body panels.. ; ) Hope the additional information helps some from the Desert/flash flood zone perspective. If we can fill in any other blanks from the installation perspective or the dust/water proofing of a setup let us know how we can be of service.
